Construction Begins At Downers Grove Library

Demolition has started in some sections of the Downers Grove library.


Pardon their dust, but Phase I of the Downers Grove Public Library renovation has officially begun, with tradesmen and contractors entering the building on Tuesday. Demolition has already started in some sections of the library.

The project is being funded with savings from the library’s operating budget for the past several year, and a $200,000 grant from the Downers Grove Public Library Foundation. Total cost of the renovation is $2.6 million

Construction is slated to end in mid-September, and will be done in phases to cause minimal disruption. The library will remain open during the renovation.

During construction, collections, furniture and other resources will be shifted around. Here ere are a few things to keep in mind when visiting the library over the next several months:

  • Public meeting rooms will be closed until further notice.

  • Study rooms are no longer available for use.

  • The computer room on the second floor is closed. Computer support staff can now be found at the Ask Us Desk. To reach computer help by phone, call (630) 960-1200 ext. 247. Or email computerdesk@dglibrary.org

  • The exterior book drop in the parking lot alley is closed.

  • Interior book return areas can be found in the lobby near the checkout desks. Look for the arrow.

  • If you can’t find something, ask library staff.

    Library patrons can also track the progress of the renovation on DGPL’s Facebook page. All in all, this is about the happiest we’ve seen anybody while construction is underway.
