District 58 Forum: Question 1

I am running for the District 58 school board, because I want to have an active voice in my children’s education. There are ways in public education that I have been concerned about in recent years, one of which is new math. I have heard so very many parents tell me that they can’t help their kids with math anymore, because they don’t understand what they are doing.

I see big conflict of intersts there. We need parents involved in education and if parents don’t understand  what the children are learning, then they can’t help. In general, I just want to be involved and have an active voice in the education of my children. 

John Miller
I am running for reelection because I feel  that it’s necessary to be involved in your community and provide service to your community. Educating students by nature you make good citizens. I support anything that makes our children more well rounded , better citizens and more involved.  I want to lead by example and I want my children to understand that it’s important to get involved.

I have financial skills. I’ve worked with organizations that are involved with children. I really believe that we need to make sure that all of our children—those that are struggling to those exceeding expectations—are all brought up to speed or are challenged. That’s one thing that I want to d  is always stay focused on the children and providing the best education we can with the dollars that we have.

Doug Purcell
Well. I started serving District 58 on the Financial Advisory Committee. I ‘ve really enjoyed it and I just felt like I wanted to do more to help the district. I have a vested interest with the children. I’ve coached different soccer leagues over the years, met a lot of parents and kids and they’re all  great. I think that I can help the district and community and it’s a good way for me to do it.

I am seeking re-election for the District 58 school board as I am passionate about education and our school community.  Having recently earned my masters degree in nursing education, and working with college students I value the importance of instilling life-long learning as well as educational values.
