District 58 Forum: Question 2

What specific experience qualifies you for this position?

John Miller
I’ve been volunteering my whole life and have been active in the community—even in grade school. I mentioned earlier, I’ve served in the military for 21 years. I love working with children. I decided to take a financial career and turn that it into something I could work with children  in the public and  private sector.  I really think that the past year and a half, I’ve shown leadership, patience in times of adversity.  I think I can speak for my record…I’m very independent, I’m not going to do something just because others are. I’m going to think about it and make up my mind and listen to all of the parties that are involved—PTA, teachers—and that’s why.

Doug Purcell
As I previously stated, I’m a financial advisor at UBS. I started off in the bond department. My career looking at municiapal bonds—a lot of them school districts—that got me started on the school district finance, the Financial Advisory Committee. I’m on the  budget committee at my church. I think I’m well-qualified on the financial end, and as far as the education end, I’m getting to know that and going to  board meetings, and also with the help of my wife, seeing really what needs to be done.

 Rose LaRue-Slater
My first qualification is that I’m a mom. Mom’s have a unique view of the way kids think and what kids need. Dad’s have it too, but we all know our moms are that important in our life. They’re the first ones you run to when you skin your knee or don’t understand something in math. I just think that being a mom is very qualifying.

I am not a teacher, but I am in  sales in the science industry. I do have to teach a lot of corporate executives things about radiation and items like that, so I understand some of the struggles teachers may have.  I also will be getting my MBA soon. These guys got the finances covered. I will better understand all of the aspects of what the school board needs to do to keep the district  healthy.

Having served on the board of education for the past eight years I believe that my leadership and professionalism as well as my educational leadership will serve me well as our district moves forward.  I have been an active board member serving on a variety of committees, attending board workshops and conventions.
