District 58 Forum: Question 6

What role do you see for the PTAs of District 58?

Doug Purcell
My kids go to Pierce Downer, so I can speak for their PTA. It’s very strong. Back to the hot issue, the PTA donating smart boards, or raising money for teachnology: I think there was a member of the school board that said that he didn’t think they should do that. I actually disagree. I think the PTAs are critical not only in helping, but providing the children with things that the district doesn’t or can’t afford.  They help with field trips, technology. They help with a lot of things to make the kids' overall school experience that much more enjoyable and fulfilling. I’d like to work with PTAs to continue to encourage them to continue their work.

PTAs in this district have been outstanding at their fundraising. I have been very impressed with fundraising, very impressed their PTA purchased six Smart Boards for the school. I do also agree that they should be allowed to do that. We are in tough economic times. Legislation, budget in Illinois is questionable right now,  so anything that parents can do to make their children’s education better or more accessible to the children—if that means providing a different way to learn.  My hat's off to these PTAs because it’s mind blowing for what they have done.

PTAs are absolutely critical. At school we’re talking about how do we get the parents, teachers and schools all...my initial experience with PTAs: They would corporate fundraising to shame. They do a very good job, because they really focus on the kids. Now on the board I’ve had chance to meet a lot of the PTAs.  I get correspondence from the PTAs and they’re all good. They really care about the schools, teachers and work well with principals. There isn’t a single principal in the district that doesn’t think their PTA is the best. It’s a wonderful problem to have. Parent, teachers and community—it’s all right there.

As a previous PTA President and previous DG Council President, I know how hard the PTAs work to support our educational community.  I would encourage the PTAs to continue to partner with the District in advocating for appropriate funding of education and also to support their neighborhood school programs such as field trips, programs, birthday book clubs, and Field Days which enhance the children’s education.
