District 99 Forum: Question 1

Why are you running for the District 99 school board?

Cliff Grammich
I have three children in the district. I have a background in education issues, other issues as well as well as communicating the work of school boards, social service issues. I think that membership on the school board can be an opportunity to express my unique skills and experiences that I have in a way that can serve the community as a whole.

As I said earlier I believe in public education and public service. Some friends of mine came to me and suggested that I run for school board and I never really considered it before. I started going to some school board meetings and quickly became caught up in it. It’s the type of work I’ve done before, so I’m familiar with it, but it also is different enough from what I do on a day-to-day basis, that it would be challenging to me. I’m totally invested in education and taking care of my children.

As I stated my connection as a high school teacher and understanding what happens in our schools on a regular basis was the impetus. And when you become  a parent...you really have that vested interest because when you hold your child for the first time as a parent and you look in their eyes and they stare back at you, your ultimate responsible is for their future and doing everything possible to make sure of their safety and well-being and also their education. That’s your most important goal as a parent and you don’t want to let them down.

I’ve been living in this community for most of my life. I’m a product of my parents making sure that education was the most important thing. I want to not only give back to my children, but as a teacher I’m invested in all kids. And I want to make sure that they have those same opportunities that I was fortunate to have. And I think with my background, my expertise in education that I would serve as an asset on the board.

My children were my primary motivation. Apart from that my wife as a 1984 grad from South—I married a gal who’s a product of our district and I see how valuable that education was to her and has been to our family.  I want to work hard to preserve that education. I think our board really needs people that can bring people together, and I think  offer those qualities in terms of my life experience as well as my profession.

I believe that public education is the most important service that government can provide.  That isn't just words to me, I’ve had the honor to have served on three boards of education for nearly 25 years. Education is so important to our family,   for our future and for society’s future, that we specifically  located to this community for the reputation of its high school. I'm proud to say I have served the interest in this community in helping  this district improve its already fine quality for our students.
