DuPage County Tightens Rules on New Places of Assembly, Worship

Single-family homes in unincorporated residential areas now prohibited from converting to places of worship, assembly.

New restrictions regarding new houses of worship and assembly were passed unanimously Tuesday by the DuPage County Board.

Under the changes to previous zoning laws, new places of worship and assembly will be prohibited in a single-family house without a variance granted by the County Board, according to the Chicago Tribune. The new rules also apply to places like lodges for veterans groups.

Board member Jim Zay said the changes were necessary to protect people's property rights and to avoid situations where a single-family home is bought and shortly after “there are 25 cars in the driveway and (neighbors) are up in arms,” the Chicago Tribune reported.
