What you need to know to cast a ballot April 5.

The April 5 election is fast approaching. Here's what you need to know to cast a ballot:

Today is the final day to register to vote or transfer your registration. You can do so at the Downers Grove Public Library, the Downers Grove Township Office or Village Hall.

However, if you miss today's deadline, you can take advantage of grace period registration, which extends through March 29. This service is available only at the DuPage Election Commission office, 421 North County Farm Road, Wheaton.

Two forms of identification are required for registration, at least one of which must have your current address.

Early voting begins March 14 and continues through March 31 at Village Hall. Downers Grove residents will vote for , , and and school board members, as well as a binding referendum on term limits for Village Council members and the mayor.

There are several opportunities for voters to inform themselves about the candidates. In addition to Patch's coverage, three public events are scheduled:

 

March 16: Forum for District 58 and District 99 candidates hosted by the League of Women Voters of Downers Grove, Woodridge and Lisle. 7-9 p.m., Downers Grove Village Hall, 801 Burlington Ave.

March 23: Forum for Village Council candidates hosted by the LWV. 7-9 p.m., Downers Grove Village Hall, 801 Burlington Ave.
