Museum Receives Merit Award

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. - The Downers Grove Park District Museum received the Award of Merit for its History Camp on the Road summer camp from the Illinois Association of Museums on September 13, 2011.

The Illinois Association of Museums (IAM), organized in 1994, is composed of museums, historical and genealogical societies, zoos, arboreta, and other cultural and educational agencies in Illinois that are involved in the preservation and interpretation of history, prehistory, natural and built environments, and social, scientific, cultural, and/or artistic endeavors. IAM is an agent for positive change in the museum community - providing advocacy, promoting best practices, and fostering the exchange of ideas.

The History Camp on the Road program is a week-long summer camp that offered children from Downers Grove and surrounding communities an opportunity to experience the unique regional history. Participants had the chance to visit a broad selection of museums including a local agricultural themed museum, an historic house museum and a county run historical museum.  Each day the campers visited a different local historic site where they spent the day actively participating in hands on history sessions as well as guided tours of the historic location.
