New Hours for Liquor Sales in Downers Grove on Agenda Tonight
Downers Grove Village Council to discuss new hours for sale of alcohol.
Downers Grove bar owners could see an additional hour to sell cocktails on Friday nights if the village council passes an ordinance to extend the time of operation.
Since March, village bar owners have been able to sell spirits for an extra hour on Friday nights thanks to a pilot program spurred by requests from area bar and restaurant owners. The village council adopted an ordinance amending Friday hours from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m., but it is set to sunset Sept. 1.
Over the six-month period the Downers Grove Police Department monitored the new closing time for any sign of increase in liquor-related issues such as DUIs. However, they reported there has been “no significant increase in liquor-related issues,” according to a village report.

After studying the ordinance, the village Liquor Commission recommended that the sunset clause be removed and Friday hours amended to 2 a.m.
If council approves the ordinance, alcohol could be sold in the village are from 8 a.m.-1 a.m. Monday through Thursdays. On Fridays and Saturdays alcohol could be sold from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday morning. On Sundays alcohol could be sold from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m.
