President Obama spoke to the nation this morning about his proposal to reduce gun violence; recommends background check for all gun purchases, assault weapons ban.

President Obama spoke to the nation this morning and presented a proposal to reduce gun violence.

We'll provide a link to the full video when one is posted.

"I will put everything I've got into this and so will Joe [Biden]," Obama said in his closing remarks today.

Of particular note in his proposal, Obama called for the following:

  • Reinstate lapsed ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines.
  • Requiring background checks on all gun purchases.
  • Ban armor piercing ammunition.
  • Called on Congress to confirm a new director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
  • Improve access to mental health services and provide information to mental health professionals who want to report threats of violence.
  • Provide incentives for schools to hire resource officers, should they choose to, to step up school security.

Did you see the president's address this morning? Tell us what you thought in comments below. Do Obama's recommendations seem like a common sense approach to you, or are you concerned about the rights of gun owners?

There are plenty of ways to keep up on Downers Grove news:

I agree that assault rifles aren't necessary. I believe that cigarettes aren't necessary either. However, banning something on the basis that it can cause mass amounts of harm to others isn't the answer. We honestly need to focus our attention and resources on treating the human spirit with kindness and empathy. We can not continue on a path of violent video games and movies. It desensitizes us to the realities of the deed being done. Someone who is mentally unstable like Adam Lanza, and who plays games like Halo and Tour of Duty, might have a hard time making a distinction between the video screen and real life. I recently saw a video game based on the Columbine shooting which took place in a cafeteria of a school. The scene showed two shooters surrounded by empty lunch tables and chairs. Who the hell would make a game like this??? Those are the people we should be targeting right now! Quintin Tarentino suggests he is not responsible for perpetuating violence. Jamie Foxx advocates for gun control all while starring in an extremely violent and bloody movie. Where is the out rage against this? We live in a time where there is very little value to human life. We don't even flinch when we see a murder or other violent act on TV/movie. We are the problem! Our indifference towards the plight of the individuals in our communities. Our mental and physical absence within our families. We have no one to blame but ourselves!! We need to own it!

My hand gun with a 19 round magazine has killed less people than Ted Kennedy's car!! If a person with a firearm that has more than 10 or x number of rounds is more likely to be a criminal, THEN anyone with a vagina is more likely to be a prostitute. Ban Vaginas!!

CT has conceal carry and that did not stop a kid with an automatic weapon from killing 26 people and then himself. Conceal carry does nothing for public safety and I think hurts it because there are even more guns out in the public. How many guns will be stolen and misused after they are left on a counter in public bathroom, on a car seat, etc? Guns for the protection of the home and families should be kept in the home and have a trigger lock on all of them. If that Mom had her guns locked up that kid would not have killed her and all those at the school. This is simple for those that want more guns out there just keep them locked up for the registered owners to use when they must.

Your argument carries no weight. This was a "gun free zone" meaning that NO ONE had one!! If one of these women had or even if the janitor, who had enough time to run through the halls screaming of the danger, had one, perhaps the outcome would have been different. You can't say that conceal carry doesn't work when, in this instance, it wasn't allowed to!

Hollywood also needs to examine itself. They are making anti-gun commercials with all the celebrities, but then nominate one of the sickest, most violence-promoting animals, Quentin Tarantino, for best director, movie, etc. The movies and tv shows coming out of Hollyweird are more violent, and worse, completely desensitizing of violence, then anything else out there.

DGGOPer, you are Wrong! #1: an "automatic" weapon was NOT used in the CT killings. #2: firearm ownership has Double in last 8 years and violent crime has decreased by about 49%. #3: a locked up and/or unloaded gun is about as useful as a rock in a situation when a firearm is needed. #4: "Registration" of firearms will NOT reduce crime as criminals will not "register" their guns. WHY should I "register" my firearms? Should gays/lesbians have to "register" because aids is spread moreso in the gay community?

IF A PERSON WANTED TO COMIT MASS MURDER THERE ARE MANY MORE EFFECTIVE WAYS WITHOUT THE USE OF AN ASSULT RIFLE. THE OKLAHOMA BOMBINGS FOR INSTANCE. AND TO USE THE ASSULTS ON CHILDREN AS A POLITICAL SOAP BOX IS TOTALY WRONG. TO SAY GUNS ARE THE CAUSE IS TOTALY INSANE. IT IS THE PERSON AND NOT THE GUN WHO DECIDES TO KILL ANOTHER HUMAN BEING. REMEMBER ANYTHING CAN AND HAS BEEN USED AS A WEAPON. ASK CAIN.
