D99 Approves Plethora of Items

Board gets in the giving spirit during Monday night's meeting at North, approving numerous action items.

With no “new business” on Monday's board meeting agenda, the board made sure to take care of as much old business as possible, voting on and unanimously approving a plethora of action items. Those items were:

District Goals

The board finalized months of work and discussion over its 2011-2012 and tentative 2012-2013 district goals by voting and on passing the two separate documents.

Some of the goals the district has for the 2011-2012 school year are:

•Establish a plan for deploying mobile computers to faculty beginning in the fall of 2012.

•Prepare a 5-year forecast to identify expected future operational issues that could affect the stability of the District’s finances.

•Analyze the capacity to which Student Services staff integrate resources and strategies to advance student college and career awareness as well as academic and social-emotional learning.

•Audit of D99 Literacy approaches at both campuses. (Tentative 2012-2013 goal)

Dramatic Literature Course

Seniors at North and South next year will have the opportunity to take a Dramatic Literature course after the board voted to approve the course after hearing a presentation on its content from department chairs Monday night. The course will focus on the individual works of classical and contemporary playwrights, focusing on the cultural, political and literary contexts of various works.

Additional Master Site Plan projects

After receiving an in-depth presentation regarding additional Master Site Plan projects during its December 5 Special Workshop Meeting, the board approved nearly $950,000 worth of new projects, with funding being covered by “unencumbered project funds.”

Some of the additional projects are:

•lighting upgrades for both and parking lots (estimated cost $80,000)

•rain harvesting systems for both campuses (estimated cost $160,000)

•DGN student canopy/fencing (estimated cost $406,000)

•ticket booth/entrances at both campuses (estimated cost $60,000)

Miscellaneous Policies

Policies approved by the board Monday night included:

•Policy 2.250—Access to District Public Records

•Policy 6.60—Curriculum Content

•Police 6.150—Home and Hospital Instruction

A policy up for approval regarding student athlete head injuries will be sent back to the policy committee to develop specific language for an amendment presented by board member Keith Matune.
