District 58 Board to Consider 2012-13 Budget, Strategic Goals Plan

The district expects to adopt a $56.1 million operating budget with a deficit of $537,650 on Monday night.

 will consider Monday the adoption of a $56.1 million budget with a slight deficit for the 2012-13 school year.

The District 58 school board is expected to vote on the budget during its monthly business meeting, which will be held at 7 p.m. at , 1435 Prairie Ave. A public hearing will be held just prior to the vote.

Total operating expenses for fiscal year 2013 are projected at $56.1 million, while operating revenues are expected to be about $55.6 million. The projected deficit is $537,650.

“We anticipate that normal operating revenue sources will match or come close to normal operating expenses,” District 58 Controller James Popernik said in May. “It looks as though we will be in good shape again.”

The proposed budget reflects planned continuation of all district programs; the addition of 20 minutes to the schools day, with accompanying increases in personnel staffing and transportation costs; increases in facilities maintenance spending; as well as some other minor changes.

Expenditure assumptions include a 5-percent increase in benefits insurance, and a 1.5-to 4-percent increase in salaries, according to contracts. The district also is increasing the budget for Operations and Maintenance expenditures from $200,000 to $500,000, for items such as asphalt repair and the launch of a carpet replacement program in the summer of 2013, District 58 officials said.

The District 58 school board will also consider Monday night the adoption of its strategic goals action plan for the 2012-13 school year.
