Downers Grove North Swimmers Win Sectional, Break Pool Records

The girls swim and dive team qualified 12 individuals and relays in 11 events for the state meet at Evanston High School on Friday and Saturday.

The Downers Grove North girls swim and dive team will compete at the IHSA state championships after a record-setting performance at the York sectional Saturday.

The Trojans won five individual events and three relays, and broke five pool records to win the sectional with 290 points. A total of 12 individuals and three relays qualified for the state meet, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Evanston Township High School.

Juniors Gabby and Maddy Sims and sophomores Emily Albrecht and Daria Wick teamed up to beat the pool record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:44.42.

Senior Hannah Kaufmann, sophomore Gaby Serniute, Albrecht and Wick set a new pool record in the 200 freestyle relay with at time of 1:37.61. Gabby and Maddy Sims, Abrecht and Kaufmann broke the 400 freestyle relay record with a time of 3:30.42.

Gabby Sims set two individual pool records, posting a 50.53 in the 100 freestyle and 54:89 in the 100 backstroke.

Also winning Saturday was Albrecht in the 50 freestyle (24.13), and Maddy Sims in the 200 individual medley (2:07.03) and the 100 butterfly (56.48). 

Wick earned state berths in the 100 butterfly (58.29) and 200 freestyle (1:55.56). Serniute also won berths in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.69) and the 50 freestyle (24.55).
