Downers Grove South High School to Perform Play 'Arabian Nights'

Students will perform Nov. 2-4, with evening performances on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and a performance on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Students at South High School in Downers Grove will perform the play “Arabian Nights” this weekend.

The show will run Nov. 2-4, with evening performances on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and a performance on Sunday at 3 p.m.

The community is welcome to attend. Tickets are $5 for the Friday and Saturday performances. Tickets are $10 for the Sunday performance, which includes a catered Middle Eastern dinner.

Tickets are limited and are available at the door or by calling the activities department at 630-795-8518.

"Arabian Nights" is filled with tales of love, comedy and dreams. Scheherazade's cliffhanger stories prevent her husband, the cruel ruler Shahryar, from completing ruthless acts, and after 1,001 nights, Shahryar is cured of his madness and Scheherazade returns to her family.

This adaptation offers a blend of the lesser-known tales from "Arabian Nights" with the recurring theme of the transformative power of storytelling. The final scene brings the audience back to a modern day Baghdad with the wail of air raid sirens threatening the rich culture and history that are embodied by these tales.

Nationally recognized playwright Mary Zimmerman originated the production at the Lookingglass Theatre in Chicago.

“Our show is unique in that it includes musicians who will play traditional Middle Eastern instruments, as well as dancing, singing, pantomime and improvisation,” said Tiffany Rubin, director of "Arabian Nights" at South High.

The cast features the following students: Antowan Lee, Brett Cohen, Claire Kent, Conor Orth, Dan Balsamo, Danielle Deem, David Ferguson, Ilirida Memedovski, Jack LeBaron, Jarrel Washington, Lucas Welker, Maddie Kuerschner, Rose Murphy, Sarah Nicols, Steven Rusky, Tori Burr, and Trupti Potdukhe.

Student musicians are Brian Moroney, Ian Williams and Luke Josey.

The show is directed by South High’s Tiffany Rubin; Abby Armato is student directing and Hunter Evans is technical director.

Honestly, I couldn't understand why they spent so much money for a parking lot in the first place???

The problem is the Dept of Agriculture's standards are aimed at farm animals. The standards are wayRead More too low for pet breeding but the USDA has not yet differentiated housepets. She is giving the standard boilerplate answer all puppy mill breeders give. The fact that she passed inspections doesn't mean a thing. Everyone knows the vet she has enlisted is a puppy mill breeder himself so that is an empty argument too. Blah, blah, blah - the same old answers. You've got a good smoke & mirrors show going Madam, but the public is starting to catch on.....
