The Downers Grove North Parents Club has hosted the post-prom cruise for several years, with parents of underclassmen volunteering as chaperones. Chicago has also been the prom venue for some time, but all students are required to ride a school bus to and from the festivities.

Students also frequently extend the event into Sunday, although school administrators have cracked down on "Prom Monday."

"Since Prom takes place on Saturday, May 14, all seniors are expected to be in school all day on Friday, May 13. North High does not support, condone, or encourage any “ditch” day or extended Prom weekends—both of which negatively impact student achievement and successful course completion. Parents are asked to support this practice," according to the North website.

"Each school’s building administrators and parent clubs/PTA often consider input from students when developing plans for all dances, including prom," said Jill Browning, communications director for District 99. "Plans and venues often change annually according to student interest, availability, and the school calendar."
