Downers Grove South Athletes Sign National Letters of Intent

South High hosted a signing day Wednesday for tennis standout Cody Freischlag and baseball players Brian Glowicki, Danny Mayer and Zachary Burdi.

Downers Grove South High School students have committed to collegiate athletic programs, the school announced Wednesday.

Seniors Brian Glowicki, Cody Freischlag, Danny Mayer and Zachary Burdi were all honored during a special signing ceremony.

Baseball

Brian Glowicki, University of Minnesota 

Glowicki was the "ace" for the Mustangs last year, going 8–2 with a 1.40 ERA. He had 78 strikeouts while walking only seven in 64 innings pitched. Glowicki  earned all-conference honors last season, and was selected by the coaches of the West Suburban to play in the Stevenson Showcase. He will attend the University of Minnesota on scholarship next fall.

Danny Mayer, University of the Pacific

Despite missing six weeks to injury last year, Mayer still hit .342 with 12 RBI, which included six doubles, one triple, and two home runs. On the mound, Mayer was 1-0 with a 2.74 ERA, with 15 strikeouts and four walks in 12.1 innings. Mayer will play first base and pitch next spring. He will attend the University of the Pacific on scholarship next fall.

Zachary Burdi, University of Iowa

During his junior season, Burdi was 4–3 with a 2.97 ERA, including 40 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched. Burdi was also the team's lead-off hitter and centerfielder, hitting .300 while scoring 21 runs, stealing 12 bases and driving in 14 runs. Burdi will continue to pitch anf play outfield in the spring. He will attend the University of Iowa on scholarship next fall.

Tennis

Cody Freischlag, Colorado Mesa University

Senior tennis captain Cody Freischlag has accepted a scholarship offer to play for Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, CO. Freischlag—a three-time conference champion, three-time state qualifier and three-time all-state selection with 110 victories to his credit—has been a major part of three Mustang West Suburban Conference and IHSA sectional championships, along with placing his teams in the top 10 in the state. The Colorado Mesa Mavericks compete in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and are a perennial Division II powerhouse. As a freshman next year, Freischlag is expected to step in and make an immediate contribution for the Mavericks.
