Downers North Gymnast is Oak Brook Athlete of the Year

Gymnast/cheerleader John Schubert is the second in his family to win the award, following his brother Luke, the 2011 male awardee.

Downers Grove North athlete John Schubert, a two-year state gymnastics finalist as well as an up-and-coming cheerleader, has been named the 2013 Oak Brook Athlete of the Year—following his brother Luke, who won in 2011, the Doings Oak Brook reports.

According to the paper, Schubert finished second in the state on horizontal bar and 11th on pommel horse this year, after placing third in floor exercise and 10th in parallel and horizontal bars as a junior; he plans to continue with club gymnastics and perhaps cheerleading at Penn State.

“I decided to try gymnastics because it looked fun when my brother was doing it,” Schubert told the paper. “I tore my triceps when I was in seventh grade and wanted to quit. I was kind of sick of gymnastics at that point and didn’t want to get hurt again.

“I’m really glad I decided to stick with gymnastics and try cheerleading… It’s a lot of hard work, but I ended up really having fun.”

The Oak Brook Athlete of the Year awards are handed out annually (since 1974) to one boy and one girl athlete from Oak Brook, but no girls were nominated in 2013, the paper said.
