Pilates and the Voice

Pavarotti and Streisand. When you hear those names, you think of the power behind the voice or the memory of a long held note. That power, endurance and strength does not just happen by accident. It is developed.

On Thursday, Dec.8 at 7 pm, Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center presents “Pilates for the Voice” featuring voice teacher Todd Diehl, M.M., and Laura Tarry, Pilates Fitness Specialist. This one-hour educational seminar will address the benefits of Pilates and how this core strengthening exercise practice can enhance vocal power.

The idea for this seminar was produced during a core-focused personal training session with Steve Belano, Personal Training Coordinator, and a client Rose Verona. Verona realized the muscles she was being asked to focus on were the same muscles her voice teacher asked her to use while singing.

“The Feldenkrais Method and the Alexander Technique are both well known training protocols for actors and singers, but there is a new realization that Pilates is useful for all aspects of singing. There are numerous glee clubs, choral societies and church choirs in the area. The number of people who could be helped seems unlimited,” said Diehl.

According to Laura Tarry, “Pilates can develop all of the stabilizing and deep core muscles to support the strong foundation necessary for singing. If your foundation is weak, there is muscular tension building that will eventually drain the body of the power needed for strong, lasting vocal output.”
