Roadrunner Soccer Club Teams Win Tournament

The club wants to recruit new members and will hold an open house May 12 at Lincoln Center.

The Roadrunners Soccer Club of Downers Grove U10 boys, U10 girls, U12 girls teams were crowned champions, while the club’s U13 girls’ team was a finalist in the Eclipse Select 2011 Spring Classic soccer tournament held recently in Oak Brook.

The Roadrunners’ boys’ U10 black team went undefeated on the first day of the event. On May 1, the two undefeated teams, Roadrunners and Eclipse, played for the championship. At the half, Eclipse was up 2-1. In the second half the Roadrunners scored three unanswered goals to win 4-2. The team is coached by Jared Appel, a prior Chicago Magic and collegiate Division I soccer standout.

The Roadrunner girls’ U10 white team finished their first tournament, defeating teams from Eclipse, as well as Munster, IN. The team is one of three Roadrunner girls’ teams in this age group and participates in Illinois Women’s Soccer League’s C division. The team is coached by Becca Hughey, a former Loyola University Division I soccer standout.

The Roadrunner girls’ U12 black team also went undefeated April 30, holding its opponents to one goal in two games. The team defeated an Eclipse team from northwest Indiana in the championship match, 5-1. The team is one of two Roadrunner girls’ teams in this age group and participates in Illinois Women’s Soccer League’s B division after winning the C division in the Fall 2010 season. The team is coached by Simi Wakawa, a former Elmhurst College and Division III collegiate player.

The Roadrunner Girls’ U13 black team defeated teams from La Grange (Celtic) and Glenview (Trevian) to advance them into the championship match against the Chicago Fire Juniors. The Roadrunners started out the championship match with a 1-0 lead in the first half, demonstrated excellent possession, but turned over the game on a late penalty kick to their opponents. The U13s play in the Illinois Women’s Soccer League’s AB division, after participating in the league’s top Champions and A divisions in prior seasons.

The Roadrunners Soccer Club serves girls and boys ages 6 to 18. Roadrunners’ professional soccer coaches follow The Roadrunner Way, a curriculum developed specifically to foster a consistent soccer environment from skills, to team play, to soccer philosophy. Established in 1980, the Roadrunners’ club draws players from Downers Grove and surrounding communities.
