Softball: Hornets Take Advantage of Mustang Errors

Costly miscue in sixth inning, strong performance by pitcher Amy Narotsky send Mustangs to 7-2 loss against Hinsdale South

Hinsdale South, led by pitcher Amy Narotsky, took advantage of defensive lapses by rival  and pulled away with a four-run sixth inning for a 7-2 win, handing the Mustangs their first conference loss of the season.

“They outplayed us. It was a real good game on their part,” Downers South coach Ron Havelka said.

The Mustangs (21-6) took the lead with two runs in the top of the first on RBI singles by Katy LaCivita and Aleisha Bozek. Pinch-runner Julianna Tassone, however, was tagged out trying to advance to third on Bozek’s hit.

Narotsky, after a tough first inning, found her rhythm on the mound and the Hornets’ defense more than held up their end, committing only one error. She pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and stranding five runners.

“Outside of the first inning, we didn’t score and didn’t get runners on base,” Havelka said.

Narotsky was a catalyst at the plate as well. She drew a walk on four pitches to start the bottom of the third, setting up a two-run double by Cecie Portillo to give the Hornets a 3-2 lead.

“She [Narotsky] is a nine hitter. We count on her to get on her base,” Hornets coach Kelly Van Hout said.

Mustangs pitcher Jen Nichols had problems with location and her infield didn’t help much, committing three errors.

The last of those three errors ended up costing the Mustangs. The Hornets (14-12) went on the attack again in the sixth. Narotsky started things off by reaching on an error by shortstop Danielle Trezzo. Dana Capocci and Brooke Dodson had RBI singles and Cori Coleman hit a two-run double to put the game out of reach for the Hinsdale South.
