DGN Radio Students to Hold Car Wash for Make-A-Wish Foundation

Charity car wash and radio "Rock-A-Thon" to take place this Saturday, June 16.

If you're planning on washing your car this week wait until Saturday when students associated with the radio station—WDGC 88.3 FM—will be holding a charity car wash to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The event, planned by radio students Alex Duta and Jordan Gustafson, will consist of a charity car wash from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a 16-hour long “Rock-A-Thon” radio show hosted by Duta, Gustafson and others. The “Rock-A-Thon” will go on the air at 8 a.m. and wrap up at Midnight.

Duta and Gustafson came up with the idea out of a desire to promote the radio station and give back to the community. Choosing Make-A-Wish as the charity was an easy decision for Duta, who will be a sophomore in the Fall and hopes to pursue broadcast journalism after high school.

“I really liked childhood, and really liked being little and being able to play with friends and make mistakes without being harshly judged,” Duta said. “I feel really sorry for kids who have life-threatening issues and have to look at the future but aren't really sure if they're going to see it, so I thought it was a worthwhile cause.”

While echoing Duta's sentiments about the quality of the charity, Gustafson, who will be a senior this Fall, added the event is a great way to give back to the community who has supported the radio station.

“The community really supported our station, and without them, we'd have no one to talk to,” Gustafson said. “And we really want to help.”

Added Duta: "If they don't trust us with washing their car, they can still donate."

Shane Gustafson, Jordan's brother and former DGN student who graduated in 2011, created a YouTube video to help promote the event, which you can either watch above or on YouTube. Gustafson is proud to see the initiative being taken by Duta, his brother, and the rest of the radio students. It's an initiative he wishes the radio station took when he was still in shchool.

"I think it's really nice what they're doing in the community," he said. "When I was there we never did anything like this and I kind of wish we had."

The car wash will run this Saturday, June 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Each car wash will cost $5 with 100 percent of the proceeds being donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The entrance for the car wash will be on Forest, with signage directing traffic on Main and Lincoln. The WDGC “Rock-A-Thon” will air Saturday from 8 a.m. to Midnight on 88.3 FM.
