Letter to the Editor: Local Pantry Thanks Community

Downers Grove Area FISH Pantry thanks community for support in 2011.

We wish to thank the community for the overwhelming support we have seen this year at the , especially in the last few months. In addition, periodically we learn that there are still people in our town who have no idea how complete our services are in caring for our neighbors in need.  With that new knowledge of the variety of things we do, we find increased interest in those wanting to help out.

The Downers Grove Area FISH Pantry is grateful for the enormous number of contributions we have received from very generous members of our community, as well as from members of Westmont, Darien, Lisle, and Woodridge.  Some of you we know and have formerly thanked, but many more of you anonymously donate and do so on a regular basis. We have seen an increase in the numbers of people needing our services in each of the last 16 months.  All of you have played a big part in helping our neighbors in need.

In addition to supplying food, we also provide rides to the doctor for our seniors, disabled, and needy citizens, and provide financial assistance when appropriate.   This, too, takes money and we are grateful for your dollars as well.  Our clothes closet is always busy and provides clothing necessities for family members.

To the many churches and church groups; local businesses; Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops; elementary, junior and high school students, individuals, family groups, neighborhood parties and all others, we thank you for making such a difference in caring for, and bringing dignity to, our most vulnerable citizens.  We continue to support 150 families a month with total numbers reaching between 450 and 500 people every month. We could not do it without the donations of food, clothing and money that you so generously give for others.

Downers Grove Area FISH celebrates 43 years of service to our community in 2012. The local support received from our community is invaluable, including over 100 volunteers who make this service for others work.
