Kick Your Christmas Tree to the Curb

Get a peek at what's ahead this week in Downers Grove.

Using the snow days to take down your Christmas decorations? If you have a live tree, we know how you can dispose of it.

Kick it to the curb.

Free curbside collection of live Christmas trees, only, will be offered by Republic Services from Jan. 6–17, on your regular pickup day. Trees must be free of tinsel ornaments and hooks and should not be placed in bags.


Tree Recycling 

The Downers Grove Park District will host two drop-off sites for Christmas trees from December 26, 2013 to Jan. 13. Trees are turned into wood chips which will be used as mulch within parks and landscaping projects. Locations are: 

  • Whitlock Park at 40th St. and Fairview, in the the parking lot off Fairview; 
  • McCollum Park at 6801 S. Main St., in the north parking lot off 
    67th St. 

The Willowbrook Wildlife Center, 525 S. Park Blvd .Glen Ellyn, will be collecting Christmas live trees, garland, and wreaths after the holidays. Bring your greens to the Glen Ellyn center and they will make good use of them for animal habitats.  Only natural materials are accepted.

Become a Brainiac! Give your brain a workout by playing fun and stimulating games designated to sharpen your mind.  You will leave feeling energized and armed with activities to do at home. Brainiacs Club meets every second Friday of the month. There is a nominal charge of $2 and registration is required. SATURDAY, JAN. 11
Used Book Collection:  The Downers Grove Area Branch American Association of University Women will collect used books on Saturday, January 11, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the front of Eagle Storage at 555 Rogers St., Downers Grove. We accept paperbacks, hard covers,  textbooks (published after 2004). All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

The books collected will be sold  at the 56th Annual Used Book Sale June 18–21, at Henry Puffer School in Downers Grove.  Proceeds benefit education through  scholarships and research.
