Pizza Wars and Preschool Open Doors—This Week in Downers Grove

Pizza fans, prepare for Battle! Local pizza places will compete for "Best Pizza" in District 99's first-ever 'Pizza Wars' Jan. 16 at Downers Grove South. Eight local pizza makers will come together under one roof in support of the District 99 Education Foundation, which benefits the students of North High School and South High School in Downers Grove. During the first-ever “Pizza Wars” event, to be held on Thursday, Jan. 16, attendees will receive a pizza sample from each of 8 participating restaurants. "How do I get in on that?" Find out how.

Get a Peek inside Grove Children's Preschool: District 58's Grove Children's Preschool program will host a Winter Open House for all current and prospective families from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15.  Current families will have the opportunity to celebrate their child's work, and all prospective families are invited to attend to learn more about the program and visit with staff. CD Release at Two Way Street. Two Way Street Coffee House, 1047 Curtiss Ave., welcomes Chicago singer/songwriterAmy Dixon-Kolar for a special CD release concert on Friday Jan. 17, 2014, 8:15 p.m. Tickets $7. SATURDAY, JAN. 18
West Suburban Symphony at Masonic Temple: 
Five groups of classically trained musicians, ranging from duets to quintets, will perform popular music in a casual setting, with West Suburban Symphony Society music director Peter Lipari as master of ceremonies.

The show features vocal and instrumental renditions of hits by top rock bands from the ‘60s to today, plus music by Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Henry Mancini, Astor Piazzolla and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Hosted by the Athletes of Dance school and the West Suburban Symphony Society, the “fusion” show takes place in the performance hall of the historic Masonic Temple,

SUNDAY, JAN. 19
Tivoli Theatre Hosts United States Coast Guard Academy Chorale: Experience the musical ensemble of the United State Coast Guard’s Cadet Chorale featuring Lisle-resident cadet, 1/c Kendra Smith in a special performance at the Tivoli Theatre, 5021 Highland Avenue in downtown Downers Grove. The concert starts at 2 p.m.  Admission is free and open to the public. Get more info.
