The seven-member Downers Grove Village Council is responsible for setting policy and providing direction to the professional management staff headed by the Village Manager. As the council's presiding officer, the mayor is the town's leading elected official, acting in a ceremonial and leadership role throughout his or her term.

The current mayor, Ron Sandack, was elected in 2007. Commissioner Marilyn Schnell, the mayor pro tem, was elected to her sixth term in 2009. Other commissioners are Bob Barnett (2009), Bruce Beckman (2007), Sean P. Durkin (2007), Geoff Neustadt (2007) and William Waldack (2009).

Members of the Village Council are elected to four-year terms, with three or four members chosen every two years in a non-partisan election. The next municipal election will be held on April 5, 2011.

When asked what makes this community great, Mayor Ron Sandack responded:

"Everything. Downers Grove has diverse neighborhoods, great schools and parks; proximity to Chicago, airports and highways; a vibrant downtown, a well-regarded regional hospital; terrific police, fire and public works; a connected and involved business community; ample amenities for all citizens; and a sense of neighborliness and community that is unmistakable. All of this is achieved because Downers Grove is comprised of good, caring and involved residents who care deeply about their community and their neighbors."
