The centerpiece of the Downers Grove downtown business district, historic Main Street Station is one of three local Metra stops on the Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railway's Chicago-Aurora line. The station sustained heavy damage in April 1947, when a Burlington Railroad Zephyr passenger train hit a piece of farm equipment and crashed into the building, killing two and injuring 34. Today, the station houses a coffee bar and barber shop and is serviced by two commuter lots and a parking deck, as well as Pace and the Downers Grove Commuter Shuttle. Adjoining the station is the Main Street Plaza, which features a large fountain and, during the holiday season, is the scene of the village's tree-lighting ceremony.
