Built in 1964, South High School is one of two schools in Community High School District 99. The school draws students from Woodridge, Darien and Bolingbrook in addition to Downers Grove. The school offers a variety of courses, including honors and Advanced Placement (AP), and features cutting-edge science labs and first-class fine arts rooms. The Class of 2009's average ACT composite score was 22.3, more than two points about the state average. More than three-quarters of South students participate in extracurricular activities, including athletic teams, theater, music, publications and the school's award-winning speech team and over 45 other clubs. The sports team, the South Mustangs, compete in the West Suburban Conference. Comedian Emo Phillips and Bob Bryar of the My Chemical Romance band are two celebrity alums.
