Principal Linda Welch leads a staff of 14 full-time teachers who serve the needs of the school's 300 students. Whittier also is proud of the high degree of parent involvement it enjoys. The school is among seven in the district to earn Academic Excellence awards for sustained high performance on the Illinois Standard Achievement Test.
Whittier also is the site of a Weather Bug meteorological station. The school's mascot is the jaguar.

Longfellow Center also hosts meetings of the District 58 school board on the second Monday of each month from September through May. During the summer months, the board meets in the air-conditioned Administrative Service Center.
In observance of its 80th anniversary in 2009, the Longfellow Center was named a local historic site by the Downers Grove Historical Society.
