A former ball bearing factory, Village Hall is the hub of Downers Grove operations, housing the offices of the Village Manager, Village Attorney and Village Clerk, as well as the Community Development, Finance, Building Services, Community Events, Information Services, Communications and Human Resources departments.
In 2009, the Community Development Department issued 1,339 building permits, while the Village Clerk's Office processed 472 Freedom of Information Act requests and issued 1,153 licenses.

The current mayor, Ron Sandack, was elected in 2007. Commissioner Marilyn Schnell, the mayor pro tem, was elected to her sixth term in 2009. Other commissioners are Bob Barnett (2009), Bruce Beckman (2007), Sean P. Durkin (2007), Geoff Neustadt (2007) and William Waldack (2009).
Members of the Village Council are elected to four-year terms, with three or four members chosen every two years in a non-partisan election. The next municipal election will be held on April 5, 2011.
