The former Comcast SportsNet reporter released a statement on her website Tuesday addressing her infamous Chicago Blackhawks slip-up and past appearances on a controversial sports show.
Five days after her dismissal from Comcast SportsNet Chicago, reporter Susannah Collins is finally speaking out. Collins released the following statement on her website Tuesday, addressing her now infamous on-air gaffe and past appearances on the controversial talk show Sports Nutz: As most of you know by now, I had a slip-up last week on the air while covering the Blackhawks playoff series. As a result of the attention it received, an old web-based sports comedy series I participated in several years ago came to light. The intention of that show was to present a satirical, tongue-in-cheek approach to sports but, unfortunately, some of the material it contained was off-color and offensive. I understand why some may have been offended by …

Comcast SportsNet Chicago fired Collins on Thursday after an on-air gaffe about the Chicago Blackhawks led to revelations about raunchy sports show appearances, the Tribune reports.
Comcast SportsNet Chicago reporter Susannah Collins, a Downers Grove native, was fired Thursday after an on-air gaffe went viral and led to revelations about other controversial sports show appearances, the Chicago Tribune reports. "Due to circumstances unrelated to her on-air remarks Tuesday night, Susannah Collins and Comcast SportsNet Chicago have parted ways," Phil Bedella, vice president and general manager of CSN Chicago told the Tribune. "We appreciate everything Susannah has contributed to our network over the past year and wish her the best in her future endeavors." While reporting during a Chicago Blackhawks playoff game Tuesday, Collins accidentally said that the team "had a tremendous amount of sex during the regular season…

The Crown Vic that shuttled the oversleeping then-World-No.-1 to Medinah CC may have saved the Ryder Cup for Europe; it sold for about $7300 on Monday.
In the same week as golf's biggest tournament, the Masters, a piece of the sport's local lore—the Lombard Police car that shuttled golf's then-World-No.-1, Rory McIlroy, to the final day of the Ryder Cup in September—has been sold for $7,351, the Chicago Tribune reports. "It certainly exceeded the value assigned to a Crown Victoria that's been in the police fleet," Lombard Director of Public Works Carl Goldsmith told the paper. "We're pleased with the results." Staying in a Lombard hotel, McIlroy overslept on the tournament's final day due to mixing up Central and Eastern time zones, and was raced to the golf course in the car by Lombard Deputy Chief Pat Rollins, arriving minutes before he would have been disqualified. The European team …

A current gay NFL player could come out in a few months and continue to play in the league, according to an online columnist. His biggest concern? Harm from homophobic fans. How would you react if he played for your favorite team?
In the same week the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in the case of California's Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage case, a CBS Sports online columnist says a current gay NFL player could come out publicly within the next few months. This player would become the first athlete in one of America's major team sports to be openly gay and continue to play. READ: Check Out the Full CBSSports.com Column for More Details But the obstacle keeping this unidentified player from revealing his sexual orientation isn't the fear of how teammates or even opposing players will react, writes CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman, citing former and current NFL players as sources for this information. It's a worry of what fans might do, Freeman …

Downers Grove South teacher Kevin Ahrens credits a friendship from his days at Lyons Township High School for setting into motion his career as a special needs educator.
A high school friendship changed the course of Kevin Ahrens’ life. Ahrens played varsity baseball while a student at Lyons Township High School. His coach, Terry Sullivan, asked him to help the team’s manager, a student with special needs, learn some tasks, such as how to organize baseballs and where to store equipment. That partnership blossomed into a friendship that shaped Ahrens’ career as a special needs teacher at Downers Grove South High School. On St. Patrick’s Day, Ahrens, now a coach himself, led the DGS Special Olympics basketball team to victory at the state championship. “It was a magical year,” said Ahrens, of La Grange, who began coaching the team this fall. Every single player got to play for at least part of each game …

She just really wasn't that great at her job, with the giggling, and the high-pitched voice, and the average-at-best interviewing skills. She made Sara Kustok look like Barbara Walters. There. I said it. Watch some of those Sports Nuts videos. Ask yourself if someone who furthered her career making d*ck jokes should really be interacting with the paying customers in a family entertainment setting…   more ›
