If you haven’t yet registered to vote, get it off your to-do list now. The voter registration deadline for the April 9 consolidated election is Tuesday, March 12. Two forms of identification are needed when registering, according to election officials. Early voting will be held March 25 through April 6. Incumbent Bob Barnett will be the first of six candidates listed on the April 9, 2013 ballot; newcomer Greg Hosé will be slated last.
The official ballot order has been set for the 2013 Downers Grove Council race, and the two incumbent candidates have received top billing. A lottery was held Nov. 27 to determine the six candidates' placement on April 9, 2013 ballot, according to Downers Grove Village Clerk April Holden. Four candidates—incumbents Robert "Bob" Barnett and Marilyn J. Schnell, and newcomers David S. Olsen and Susan Walaszek—filed their nomination papers at 8 a.m. Nov. 19. Two additional newcomers, Greg Hosé and Don Jankowski, filed just before the deadline Nov. 26. Under state law, for those who file at the same time, a lottery is held to determine ballot placement. The Illinois Senate amended its election code Nov. 29 so that candidates in local elections—from park district to school board—can submit nominating petitions until 5 p.m. on the day after Christmas.
Merry Christmas, candidates in local elections: You have an extra day to get your name on the April 2013 ballot. A new state law, passed Nov. 29 by both houses of the General Assembly, is also good news to municipal clerks, school board secretaries, township clerks, park district and library secretaries and other local election officials who were previously required to accept candidate petitions until 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve, regardless of whether their respective governmental offices were open. The law is effective immediately. Nominating petitions for the April 9, 2013 school board election in Community High School District 99 are now available, according to district officials. Forms may be picked up in the board secretary's office at the Administrative Service Center, 6301 Springside Ave. in Downers Grove. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nominating petitions may be circulated for signature beginning Sept. 25, 2012.
