Today, we feature a brief Q&A with North Principal Scott Kasik. PATCH: What are your main goals or areas of focus for the 2012-13 school year? KASIK: One of our ongoing goals in student growth. Back to school shopping can wait because it's still summer.
It happens every year. The calendar flips to Aug. 1, and everyone collapses into full-on late summer freak-out mode. “Wait, is that a leaf laying there? The holidays are just around the corner!! What happened to that BBQ we were gonna have! I never assembled the grill! Oh man, look at my legs! They're as pasty white as caulk rolled in powdered sugar! ” Relax, the warm, summer sun will be around all month long, and September is the most underrated month of the year. I call it ‘grown-up summer’—heat without the humidity and the added bonus that the kids are back in school so you can relax outside without having to listen to ‘What are we doing today DADDDDD??” every three minutes. Tired of packing up the same old brown bag lunches for your kids to head to school with? Here are HealthCastle.com’s picks for each course of a healthy, easy-to-prepare lunch: Main: Sandwiches. Skip the cake-like white bread and salty luncheon meat. Choose whole wheat or multi-grain bread and fill with chicken breast or the old favorite PB&J. Side: Fruit and veggies and dip. Low-fat sour cream, hummus and tzatziki are all healthy dip choices for veggies, or try low-fat yogurt for fruit. Cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, grapes and berries require no prep work at all. Dessert: Trail mix. Mix nuts, whole grain cereals, and dried fruits to add some sweet crunch to finish off your meal. Drinks: Water, juice or …
Do you remember your favorite lunch box? Today's kids have as many options as ever but nothing will take the place of the Partridge Family or Scooby-Doo or the Lone Ranger—depending on your age.

The lunch box is more than a place to put that sandwich, snack and drink, it's a place to let everyone know exactly what you like. Over the years, the size and shape of lunch boxes have changed just as the designs inspired by TV shows, movies and celebrities have also been updated to reflect the latest hot trends and true classics. That's why Justin Bieber and Darth Vader and Japanese cartoon characters are staring out at shoppers from store shelves. Back in the '70s, lunch boxes were aluminum. In the '80s, they gave way to plastic. Vintage lunch boxes now are highly collectible. They are displayed as collections in people's homes, and sometimes they get their own art gallery shows. Do you remember a favorite lunch box? What was it? Have …

Volunteers were busy sorting books Friday at the SCARCE warehouse in Glen Ellyn in preparation for the upcoming back to school fair at the DuPage County Fairgrounds. The nonprofit hopes to give away 12,000 books to children in need during the annual event. Along with the books that will be available, families will be able to get needed back to school items. Catholic Charities sponsors the event from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 8 at the DuPage County Fairgrounds, 2015 W. Manchester Rd., Wheaton. In addition to school supplies, a number of agencies, including the DuPage County Health Department, will be on hand to offer information and, in some cases, services.
