Downers Grove South Special Olympics Team Wins State Basketball Title

The 12-member team was celebrated after school Wednesday, just a few days after they won the Special Olympics Illinois State Basketball Tournament in Bloomington-Normal.

The Downers Grove South community came together in full force Wednesday to celebrate a crowning achievement for the school—a state title for its Special Olympics basketball program. The 12-member team wrapped up a 21-6 season by winning the championship at the Special Olympics Illinois State Basketball Tournament on March 17 at the Illinois State University campus in Bloomington-Normal. On Wednesday, the school held an after-school celebration to toast the team and present the players with championship T-shirts.  The team's coach, Kevin Ahrens, said the players' positive attitudes and "team-first approach" led them to the state title. "It was a magical year where everything just fell into place," Ahrens said, fighting back tears. "I'm …

Very Interesting Person: Greg Ktistou, Pro Basketball Player

Downers Grove resident Greg Ktistou juggles playing basketball in Europe and running a skills development business locally.

Greg Ktistou is at a crossroads. Unlike many metaphorical crossroads, though, whichever road Ktistou chooses will lead to him living out his dreams. Born and raised in Downers Grove, 32-year-old Ktistou just finished his 7th year of playing professional basketball in Europe. Within a couple of weeks, he'll find out whether he'll return for an eighth. If he does, it'll mean a higher level of competition. If he doesn't, it'll create an opportunity for him to expand his basketball skills development company, 'Breakaway Basketball'. Ktistou attended Downers Grove South High School and attended Eastern Illinois University on a Division 1 basketball scholarship. After his sophomore year, he transferred to and eventually graduated from Carthage …

Hornets Edge DGS to Remain Unbeaten in Conference

Okoro, DeClouette come through in the clutch as host Hinsdale South wins a thriller.

A close, physical contest that goes down to the wire. That’s what you can expect when Downers Grove South and Hinsdale South meet on the basketball court. And it was the case again Saturday night as host Hinsdale South eked out a 39-36 victory in Darien. The win was the third straight for the Hornets (6-1, 3-0), who remained tied for first in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division with Proviso East. “It’s always a battle,” said Hinsdale South coach Jen Belmonte, who once played in several of the rivalry games for the Hornets. “I think it’s just the most heated rivalry ever. Both sides played great. It was a great night.” Hinsdale South took advantage of seven Downers South turnovers to grab an 11-4 lead late in the first quarter, but …

Downers South Uses Big Rally to Beat Morton

Mustangs sink 10 three-pointers, nine in the second half, to overcome 13-point deficit.

Coming back from a double-digit deficit is never easy, but it is always possible when you have players like Jerron Wilbut and Jamall Millison on your team. Downers Grove South trailed by 13 on the road against previously unbeaten Morton Friday night, yet used a blizzard of three-pointers to come roaring back for a 62-57 West Suburban Conference Gold Division victory in Cicero. The Mustangs (6-1, 2-0) sank nine of 17 three-point tries in the second half and scored the final nine points of the game to stun Morton (4-1, 1-1). Wilbut, who scored 18 of his 20 points after intermission, led the way by draining four three-pointers, while Millison and Jordan Cannon had two each in the second half and sophomore point guard Danny Spinuzza had one. “…

Boys Bball: DGS Wins Over Hinsdale South

Benson scores 21 for Hornets but Downers South wins WSC Gold opener.

An assistant coach from Dartmouth was scouting Hinsdale South Center Brock Benson Friday night, but he ended up seeing a lot more of Downers Grove South Guard Jerron Wilbut than the Hornets would have liked. The 6'8'' Benson scored a game-high 21 points but had to sit out eight minutes in the first half after picking up three early fouls. With the big guy on the bench, Downers South was able to build a solid lead en route to a 58-46 victory in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division opener for both teams in Downers Grove. Benson scored the first four points of the game on a pair of easy layups, but was whistled for three quick fouls, the last of which came just 2:23 into the game. Downers South’s Kevin Hall made both of the ensuing free…

Downers South Captures West Aurora Regional

Jerron Wilbut and Ziggy Riauka combined for 42 points to lead the South boys basketball team to the Class 4A West Aurora regional.

Downers Grove South guard Jeron Wilbut did not have much time on the clock as he raced to the Wheaton Warrenville South end Friday night in Aurora. “Coach (Jay Baum) wanted me to take it hard to the rim, but I ran out of time,” Wilbut said. “So I did the step-back (three-pointer) instead.” The shot found nothing but net as the second-quarter horn sounded, giving the Mustangs the lead for good. “It gave us a lot of momentum going into the second half,” Wilbut said. The Wilbut buzzer-beater, one of four Downers South would score in the championship game of the Class 4A West Aurora boys basketball regional, concluded an 11-0 run for the Mustangs. Wheaton Warrenville South, the No. 10 seed in the East Aurora sectional complex, never recovered …

Downers North D-lights in Win over Evergreen Park

Trojans' defense forces Mustangs into a 32.5-percent shooting performance on final day at Lemont Christmas Classic.

Downers Grove North's D.J. Cieniawa missed several games at the beginning of the season due to mono, so he had no complaints about playing in his fourth game in as many days on Thursday morning. Even better news for Cieniawa was his game-high 14-point effort as the Trojans handled Evergreen Park 47-37 in the consolation third-place game at the Lemont Christmas Classic. Cieniawa made 7-of-10 shots and also snared a team-best eight rebounds. "We've got a lot of size and length and it's just a matter of getting the ball inside against some of these teams," he said. "We moved the ball well at times even when they changed the pressure and moved into a zone defense." Downers Grove North (7-7) jumped to a 6-0 lead against a smaller than normal, …
