Downers Grove police reports, Aug. 9-14
TUESDAY, AUG. 14 Joshua I. King, 21, of the 4000 block of West 172nd Place in Country Club Hills, was arrested around 12:25 a.m. at Ultra Foods, 1212 75th Street, Downers Grove police said. Store security said King walked out of the store with two bottles of vodka and two bottles of tequila in his backpack, police said. He was charged with retail theft. MONDAY, AUG. 13 About $50 in scrap metal was taken from Complete Systems Car Repair, 2105 Ogden Ave., sometime between Aug. 10 and Aug. 13, police said. SUNDAY, AUG. 12 Someone rifled through an unlocked car parked overnight on the 800 block of Chicago Avenue, police said. A Naperville man punched another man in the face, breaking his nose, around 10:10 p.m. Sunday in Hummer Park, 4833 Fairview Ave., Downers Grove police said. Police said they found the victim in the pavilion, bleeding profusely from the mouth and unsure if at any point he had been knocked unconscious. The victim said repeatedly he didn’t know why Henry Papushak, 30, of the 800 block of Baumont Drive in Naperville, punched him, police said. Papushak had been drinking beer throughout the day, the victim told police. Papushak had a female companion who said they had been at the Fairview train depot earlier in the day when he said he needed to “take care of some business” in the park, police said. The man backed his car into the victim on purpose before getting into a shouting match, police said.
An Aurora man purposely backed his car twice into a man who was saving a parking spot for his friend Friday evening on the 5100 block of Main Street during the weekly car show, Downers Grove police said. As the man yelled that he was holding the spot, Danny R. Hornback, 57, of the 1300 block of East Indian Trail, struck him in the leg two times, police said. Hornback then got out of his car and got into a shouting match with the man, police said. Four witnesses said they saw Hornback hit the victim with his car, police said. Hornback’s passenger said she heard the victim threaten to “kick (Hornback’s) ass,” but three of the four witnesses did not report hearing threats, police said. Two assailants approached the man from an alley before asking for his belongings, police said.
Two men punched and attempted to rob a man who was walking on the 5100 block of Main Street around 10:30 p.m. July 26, Downers Grove police said. The victim was walking northbound on the east side of Main Street when two men stepped from an alley and demanded he give them everything he had on him, police said. One of the assailants punched the man above his eye, cutting his eyebrow, police said. The offenders ran away through the alley without taking anything from the victim, who did not report the incident to police until July 31. One suspect is described as a black male in his late teens or early 20s, about 5-foot, 9-inches to 5-foot, 10-inches tall, and with a slight build. The man said another homeless man punched him in the face and showed him a gun Saturday outside 7-Eleven, but police did not find a weapon on the suspect.
Downers Grove Police were called to 7-Eleven, 5105 Fairview Ave., Saturday afternoon after getting reports of a battery but said they found no evidence of an attack when they arrived. A homeless man, who police said was drunk, told officers another homeless man punched him in the face as he slept on the ground outside the store. The man said he was resting by the 7-Eleven because he is not allowed in Hummer Park with his friends. Police said the victim claimed the other homeless man pointed a handgun at his head and said, “Stay the **** out of my turf, you’re no longer welcome here,” before walking toward Hummer Park.
