Downers Grove Schools Raise Funds for Superstorm Sandy Relief

Several schools in Grade School District 58 recently held fundraisers to aid American Red Cross relief efforts.

Downers Grove students recently teamed up to join Superstorm Sandy relief efforts. During the past few months, several schools in Downers Grove Grade School District 58 raised money through a variety of activities to donate to the American Red Cross. A “hats for hurricane relief” at Lester School, in which students could pay to wear a hat during the school day, raised nearly $800 for hurricane relief, according to District 58 officials. The El Sierra School student council sold Halloween candy as a fundraiser for the school—but after Superstorm Sandy hit, the students voted to change it to a community service project. PHOTOS: 'Butterfly Lady' Visits Belle Aire Students in Downers Grove

Butterfly expert Pat Miller visited the school Sept. 14.

Pat Miller, also known as “the Butterfly Lady,” paid a visit to Belle Aire School in Downers Grove on Sept. 14 to share her expertise with kindergarten through third-grade students. Miller, whose visit was funded by the Belle Aire PTA, became interested in monarchs and monarch conservation while presenting talks on butterfly gardening for the University of Illinois Extension office as a Master Gardener. Her good friend, Jane, met Chip Taylor the year he launched the Monarch Waystation program and became interested in promoting the concept of monarch waystations.
