Benet Has High Expectations for Volleyball Playoffs

Downers Grove resident Nora Young is one of many tall, talented seniors fueling Benet's state title quest.

With an unprecedented eight players who stand 6-foot or taller, the Benet Academy girls volleyball team literally towers over its opponents. The Redwings hope to use that height in their quest to win their first state championship. That drive begins Tuesday when Benet hosts either Joliet West or Plainfield East in the playoff opener. Benet (32-3) is the top seed at the Class 4A West Aurora Sectional and is hosting a regional for the first time. “It’s definitely a unique situation to be as tall as we are,” Benet coach Brad Baker said. “We feel very lucky and we try to take advantage of it.” The Redwings are so deep that they were able to beat a 23-win Carmel squad 28-26, 25-15 in the regular season finale on Thursday despite not playing …

Athlete Of The Week: Hannah Kaminsky

The latest installment in a series of questions and answers with area high school athletes.

Benet junior Hannah Kaminsky squeezed in this interview on Tuesday — between after-school volleyball practice and running at Edward Health & Fitness Center in Woodridge. Wait a minute, running after practice? "I just feel like as the setter, I have to touch practically one ball every play so I'm always running around the court," Kaminsky said. "I just feel like I have to keep myself in shape. And I feel like running one or two miles a day helps that. I want to be in the best shape I can when it comes down to hard matches, and whoever's in the best shape is gonna win." Benet wins a lot. The Redwings (arguably the best high school team in Illinois) improved to 9-1 Monday with a win over Downers Grove North, the public school Kaminsky would …

Girls Volleyball: Benet's Big Guns Too Much For Downers North

Redwings use height advantage to sweep host Trojans.

While Downers Grove North’s defense is not exactly a steel curtain, it is something in which the Trojans take pride. So the ease with which Benet ripped it to shreds Monday night is an indication of how deserving the visiting Redwings are of their No. 1 ranking. Sophomore Brittany Pavich pounded two early kills, and that set the tone as Benet (9-1) cruised to a 25-19, 25-14 victory in Downers Grove. “We definitely just came out and all the hitters were like, ‘Let’s put the ball up, let’s get some swings,’” Benet setter Hannah Kaminsky said. “We just wanted to come out and have fun and that’s what we were doing. “Having Brittany hit those two balls from the middle straight down was awesome. That got us all going.” Once that happened, the …

Neuqua Valley Defeats Benet for Third on Tiebreaker at Fenton

The Neuqua Valley boys golf team turned back fellow local boys golf power Benet for third place at the 29-team Fenton Invitational on Saturday morning in Bensenville.

Ian Nebendahl had a dream start at the 43rd Fenton Invitational on Saturday morning in Bensenville. The Neuqua Valley fifth man began his round of the 29-team boys golf tournament at White Pines Golf Club with a par. But then his outward nine really became interesting. “I came out pretty fast out of the gate,” Nebendahl said. Nebendahl had three consecutive birdies and rode his sizzling start to lead the Wildcats to third place in the team standings with his low round of 4-over-par 74. Neuqua Valley and Benet were tied for third place with team scores of 310, but Nick Roaches’ 79 proved to be the tiebreaker for the Wildcats. The Nebendahl start was indicative of a team-wide opening nine holes for the Wildcats on the par-70 layout. “We were…

Softball: Benet Takes Third In Class 4A

The Redwings take New Trier 7-4 and tie the school record for wins, while senior pitcher Allyson Staats sets a new school mark for pitching wins.

EAST PEORIA – Benet Academy’s softball team has developed a reputation this season as being a group that refuses to give up, even if it is down in a game. It seemed only fitting that the Redwings overcame an early deficit to New Trier to capture third place in Class 4A at the East Side Centre in East Peoria Saturday. Down 2-0 through two innings, the Redwings came through with a four-run third to pave the way for a 7-4 win, tying the school record for wins in a season (31) in the process. “Our attitude has always been that we don’t quit,” Benet coach Jerry Schilf said. “We fell behind there. In a third place game, all of a sudden you can convince yourself that it’s a meaningless game. The kids didn’t do that. They battled.” Benet (31-11) …

Softball: Benet Wins Sectional Title Over DGS

Benet Academy 5, Downers South 0: Strong hitting and pitching from Allison Staats propel Redwings to sectional title.

The sectional final started on a bad omen for Downers South when starting pitcher Jen Belmont’s first pitch hit Maeve McGuire in the shoulder.  It was a sign of things to come for the Mustangs (28-7) in their 5-0 sectional final loss to the Redwings (29-10).  Belmont struggled with her control, hitting two batters in a third of an inning and giving up two runs on an RBI double from Allison Staats and a bases-loaded walk to Shellie Schaffer. Mustangs coach Ron Havelka pulled Belmont for Aleisha Bozek, who went on to strike out the next two hitters to stop the bleeding.  Unfortunately, the psychological damage had already been done.  “It really set the tone for us, I think,” Havelka said. “And it could have been a lot worse, that first …

Boys Basketball: Mustangs' Run Stopped By Glenbard East

Glenbard East 67, Downers Grove South 62. The 18-game DGS win streak comes to a halt thanks to Rams' dynamic duo of Hill and Miller.

AURORA – Downers Grove South’s boys basketball team entered Wednesday’s Class 4A East Aurora sectional semifinal game against Glenbard East not having lost a game since Dec. 18. The Mustangs were riding a 18-game winning streak and were hoping to continue that run to force a rematch with East Aurora, whom DGS beat in the season opener, for the sectional title. The veteran Rams had other ideas, however. Glenbard East’s Division I combo of Jon Hill (Illinois State) and Zach Miller (Northern Illinois), who call each other Batman (Hill) and Robin (Miller), scored 21 and 22 points respectively to hand the Mustangs a 67-62 loss and end their season at 25-4, one of the best seasons in program history. “I am very proud of our guys,” DGS coach Jay …
