Take the Village's Bike and Pedestrian Survey

Help the village understand your wants and needs by taking its bike and pedestrian survey

With the village's increased efforts to make Downers Grove more bike and pedestrian friendly comes the opportunity for resident input. Throughout June, the village was out-and-about asking bikers and walkers what improvements they'd like to see the village make in order to make the village more bike friendly. This time, as the village continues to put together an update to the 12-year-old “Bikeway and Pedestrian” plan, they're looking for community input in the form of a survey. You can find the 23-question survey HERE and the survey will be available through August 3.

Local Bikers to Ride 200 Miles this Weekend for Charity

The Pedalheads Bike Team, filled with members of the Downers Grove Bicycle Club, will participate in the 'Tour de Farms' bike ride in Dekalb this weekend.

This weekend's Rotary GroveFest isn't the only major undertaking by a local club this weekend: The Pedalheads Bike Team, featuring many members of its off-shoot Downers Grove Bicycle Club, will embark on a 200 mile bike ride in the name of charity. Taking part in the 2012 Bike MS: Tour de Farms in Dekalb in this weekend, Team Pedalheads have raised nearly $45,000—with every biker in the ride required to raise at least $300 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society—and currently sit as the top fundraiser for the event, according to team captain Vicky Tate. If the Pedalheads can hold on and remain the top fundraiser, they'll receive certain perks at next year's ride, like the ability to be the first team to start. “Getting to leave first …

Village Seeks Input on How to Make DG More Bike Friendly

Village reps to be out-and-about seeking resident feedback on how to make Downers Grove a more enjoyable place for bikers and pedestrians.

Starting on Wednesday, the Village of Downers Grove is going to be hitting the streets to talk to bikers and pedestrians about what improvements they'd like to see the village make in order to make the community more bike friendly. As part of an update to 12-year-old “Bikeway and Pedestrian” plan expected to be presented in October, the village is looking for ways they can adjust infrastructure, provide education and generally improve the experience of the village's cyclists and walkers. According to public works director Nan Newlon, the main thing the village is looking for is what they can do to make things easier for the community. “We're looking to find out what kind of obstacles are in their way that prevent them from making trips by …

The intersection at Fairview and 55th Street is not pedestrian or bike/stroller friendly. The sidewalk at the SW corner has a drastic uphill slant that is not bike friendly. Often, there are overgrown bushes that obstructs views. This is an intersection that leads to Patriots Park and the Swim & Racquet Club, so there are plenty of kids who would benefit from making it safer.   more ›

Lessons Learned at Downers Grove Safety Town

Learning the right ways to ride and drive!

5- and 6-year-old children pay attention to Safety Town instructors during a morning class at the Recreation Center on Belmont Avenue in Downers Grove. The children are learning the safe way to look and listen to what's going on around them while riding bikes and crossing streets. During the Safety Town classes the children ride big wheel trikes to learn safety procedures. They will also view films and enjoy visits from local school bus and fire department staff. Safety Town is being conducted all week long at the center.
