Downers Grove Sports Roundup: Girls Cross Country, Boys Golf Start Season Strong

Sophomore Amanda Thate was the top finisher for the Mustangs coming into the chute in ninth place. Senior Katie Strelau and junior Haley Albers were the next scorers, finishing in 12th and 13th place, respectively. Senior Amy Rotunno finished 21st, and junior Meaghan Bosman finished 25th to round out the scoring…

Athlete of the Week: Connor Harmon

Downers Grove South's senior golfer and leader, Connor Harmon, is Woodridge's latest Athlete of the Week.

The Downers Grove South boys golf team is loaded with talent at the varsity level. On any given day, a player can threaten to break par.  Senior Connor Harmon has done more than threaten. He’s broken it. Harmon shot a one-under 35 on Friday in a match against Leyden and he did it again Wednesday against Hinsdale Central at Village Greens, shooting another 35 on the front nine.  Harmon stands out from most golfers because he plays left-handed. Regardless of direction, he hits the ball remarkably well.  How long have you been playing? I’ve been playing since I was about 4 or 5. Was your family an influence? Definitely. Neuqua Boys Golf Sends 3 Individuals To Sectional

Wildcats fall short of advancing as a team, as does Benet and Downers Grove South; but they all have some reason to cheer, nonetheless.

PLAINFIELD – Only three teams advance out of every boys golf regional, which inevitably leaves deserving teams on the outside looking in. That's what happened at the Class 3A Naperville Central Regional at the Links of Carillon. The field was so loaded with talent that it took at least a 305 just to advance to sectionals as a team, a score usually associated with advancing from a sectional to the state tournament. So, while Naperville North, Waubonsie Valley and Naperville Central celebrated fighting for another week as a team, Downers Grove South (307), Neuqua Valley (309) and Benet (311) were forced to be happy with the individuals they sent on as the team portion of their seasons came to a close.
