Boys Basketball: Downers South Seniors Lead Mustangs Over Red Devils

After winning their home regional, Downers South will move on to the East Aurora Sectional next week.

Three Downers South seniors scored in double-digits as the Mustangs, behind a strong second-half shooting performance, beat Hinsdale Central 64-51 Friday night in the Downers South Boys Basketball Regional Championship. In their final home game as Mustangs, Kevin Honn scored 20 points, Jamall Millison tallied 17, and Jerron Wilbut chipped in 12 for Downers South (22-5). Senior center Greg Garro had nine points and nine rebounds. Downers South head coach Jay Baum commended his upperclassmen after the win. “To their credit, they’ve gotten better as the year’s gone on,” Baum said. Hinsdale Central (17-10) took a 22-14 lead mid-way through the second quarter before the Mustangs got hot. Downers South finished the second quarter on a 10-2 run …

Proviso East Beats DGS to Take Control of Gold Race

Visiting Pirates remain unbeaten as late rally by Mustangs falls short.

Downers Grove South’s boys basketball team beat Proviso East twice last season en route to winning the West Suburban Conference Gold Division championship. On Thursday, Proviso East exacted its revenge. The unbeaten Pirates demonstrated why they are ranked No. 2 in the Chicago area, leading from wire-to-wire in their 78-70 victory in Downers Grove. Proviso East (15-0, 5-0) raced out to a 12-2 lead, flustering the Mustangs with a full-court press and turning the game into a track meet in the early going. The visitors eventually led by as many as 20 points in the third quarter before Downers South (13-3, 4-1) made the score respectable in the closing minutes. So what was the difference from last year, when the Mustangs swept the season …

Spinuzza's Dishes Serve Up Another Mustangs Victory

Sophomore point guard keys Downers South's blowout of Willowbrook.

Danny Spinuzza is only eight games into his varsity basketball career, but Downers Grove South coach Jay Baum has already paid him a huge compliment. "He’s an amazing point guard,” Baum said of the 5-10 sophomore. “I think he’s the next coming of Bryan Mullins. He’s got a long way to go before he’s Bryan, but he reminds me of him.” Mullins was the best point guard in school history, an All-Stater who went on to star at Southern Illinois and now plays pro ball in France. What prompted the comparison? Spinuzza’s steady play in the early going raised eyebrows, especially the fact that he’s gotten steadily better. Spinuzza had eight points, eight assists, four steals and three offensive rebounds to spark the Mustangs to an 86-41 demolition of …

Boys Basketball: Mustangs' Run Stopped By Glenbard East

Glenbard East 67, Downers Grove South 62. The 18-game DGS win streak comes to a halt thanks to Rams' dynamic duo of Hill and Miller.

AURORA – Downers Grove South’s boys basketball team entered Wednesday’s Class 4A East Aurora sectional semifinal game against Glenbard East not having lost a game since Dec. 18. The Mustangs were riding a 18-game winning streak and were hoping to continue that run to force a rematch with East Aurora, whom DGS beat in the season opener, for the sectional title. The veteran Rams had other ideas, however. Glenbard East’s Division I combo of Jon Hill (Illinois State) and Zach Miller (Northern Illinois), who call each other Batman (Hill) and Robin (Miller), scored 21 and 22 points respectively to hand the Mustangs a 67-62 loss and end their season at 25-4, one of the best seasons in program history. “I am very proud of our guys,” DGS coach Jay …

Analysis: Offensive Balance, Defensive Intensity Key to Mustangs' Success

Downers Grove South has won 16 in a row and is in prime position to make a deep playoff run thanks to its emphasis on solid fundamentals.

Downers Grove South's coaches and players preach the mantra of playing balanced offense and good defense.  That mantra has been put into practice out on the court, too. Take the Mustangs' 81-35 boys basketball victory over Addison Trail on Wednesday night. The win was the Mustangs' 16th straight and sent them into postseason play riding on a high note. Every player who stepped out on the court contributed at least one basket on offense and contributed to a defense that limited Addison Trail to 35 points.  “We just want to keep playing as a team every single night,” Downers South guard Danielius Jurguitis said.  In the first quarter, the Mustangs scored 23 points. Six different players scored at least three points during the stretch. The …

Boys Basketball: Downers South Rolls to 16th Win in a Row

Downers South 81, Addison Trail 35. Twelve different players, led by Ziggy Riauka and Danielius Jurgitis, score at least one basket in the Mustangs' show of firepower.

The Hot Read: Downers Grove South closed its regular season on a high note with a balanced offensive attack in an 81-35 boys basketball victory over Addison Trail on Wednesday night. The Mustangs built a double-digit lead in the first 4 minutes en route to notching their 16th straight win, a school record. Patch’s MVP: Mustangs forward Ziggy Riauka was a force on offense and defense in Downers South's regular-season finale. He led all scorers with 13 points. He also had eight rebounds, three blocks, and two steals.  Key Stats: Twelve different players scored at least two points for the Mustangs and four players finished in double figures.  Downers Grove South Leaders: In addition to Riauka: Danielius Jurgitis (12 points), Kevon James (11 …

Teamwork Not Foreign to These Mustangs

Lithuanian natives Jurgutis, Riauka join forces to lead Downers South's boys basketball team in a nine-game winning streak.

Downers Grove South’s high-flying guards Jerron Wilbut and Jamall Millison draw most of the attention from opponents and the media. But if you’re looking for an underlying reason why the Mustangs are 16-3 and riding a nine-game winning streak, don’t forget about their Lithuanian connection. Seniors Ziggy Riauka, a 6-8 center, and Danielius Jurgutis, 6-0 point guard, are in their first—and last—season playing together, but the Lithuanian natives have known each other since third grade and have played regularly in the off-season on the playground and for club teams. Downers South coach Jay Baum didn’t have to travel overseas to find them. Both emigrated when they were little—Jurgutis when he was 3, and Riauka at 8. But Jurgutis, who played …
