Downers Grove South High School will raise money for the Kay Yow Breast Cancer Research Fund on Jan. 26, when the girls basketball teams take on Hinsdale South.
On Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m., the varsity girls basketball team at South High School in Downers Grove will host its 5th Annual “Shoot For A Cure” breast cancer event. The school will play Hinsdale South High School. “Hinsdale South is always a challenging opponent for us on the court, but what’s even more exciting is working with them off the court in our united effort to battle cancer,” says Ellen O’Brien, a teacher and head girls basketball coach at South High. “This event really brings us all together in a positive way.” In addition to watching the game, attendees may also participate in raffles for prizes, including gift cards to local restaurants, designer products, spa treatment days, museum passes, sports memorabilia and adventures such…

Chicago's former first lady died of breast cancer one year ago on Thanksgiving day. Her legacy—that you can live with hope—still inspires people who deal with the disease today.
Maggie Daley’s nine-year battle with cancer was a paradox to those who followed her closely. A public figure by nature, the status of her health and treatment was often common knowledge, yet Chicago’s former first lady did not hold herself out to be a breast cancer spokeswoman. While the cancer center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital bears her name, the causes Daley was most passionate about were unrelated, in fact, including children’s artwork and her efforts to help bring the Olympics to Chicago. A year after she succumbed to breast cancer at age 68, Maggie Daley nonetheless continues to inspire. To those who suffer from metastatic breast cancer — breast cancer that has metastasized to other parts of the body and become deadly — Daley …

The Athenas dance team participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Sunday, Sept. 23, at Yorktown Mall in Lombard.
The Downers Grove North Athenas dance team joined the fight against breast cancer last month, volunteering at the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The varsity and junior varsity teams joined thousands of runners and walkers at the event, held Sept. 23 at Yorktown Mall in Lombard. "The girls had an amazing time at Komen for the Cure," said Jennifer Isaacson, head coach of the Athenas. "It was an inspiring experience for everyone." Isaacson said she signed up her team for the event to teach them the importance of giving back. "Obviously my job is teach them to dance, but it's also my job to teach them to be good people who do things for their school and community," Isaacson said. "I couldn't think of a better organization or event …

Downers Grove South takes on Hinsdale South in the annual event, which raises money for breast cancer research.
The Downers Grove South girls basketball teams will "Shoot for a Cure" against Hinsdale South Friday night. The varsity game starts at 7:30 p.m. at DGS. The sophomore and freshmen B teams play at 6 p.m. and the freshmen A team plays at 4:30 p.m. The game should be a good match-up. In the last meeting of the two varsity teams, Hinsdale South pulled out a win in the final seconds. "Shoot for a Cure" combines basketball and fundraising and awareness for breast cancer research. The annual event was inspired by Kay Yow, head woman's basketball coach at North Carolina State University for 34 years. Yow is the third coach in women’s Division I history to coach more than 1,000 games at the same school, and one of six to achieve 700 career …
