SUMMIT -- On a blustery night, two rivals met in a semifinal match at Class 3A Argo boys' soccer sectional and the outcome was decided on a huff and a puff after a throw into the wind. Lyons Township's Elliot Borge scored 33 seconds into overtime to give the Lions a 2-1 victory over Downers Grove North on Tuesday night. Borge, a junior midfielder, connected for the game-winner after being set up on a throw-in by LT senior defenseman Peter Kralovek-Kirchherr. The win for the Lions (21-1-2) was their third straight over Downers Grove North. The two rivals met twice in the regular season, once in tournament play and once in a conference match. Anthony Jeffries, a two-year starter, has the Downers Grove North boys soccer team thinking about a state title.
Anthony Jeffries may be just a sophomore, but it's no surprise he's already a special player on the soccer field for Downers Grove North. Not only did he start kicking a ball around at the age of 2 and join a club team at age 5, but his father Mike just so happened to be as good a coach as any youngster could ever ask for. Anthony, who also goes by A.J., is the son of former Duke All-American Mike Jeffries, who not only excelled as a player both collegiately and professionally, but who also coached at the college and professional level. "I played basketball for a while, but I gave that up," said A.J., who started at right midfield last fall as a freshman for the Trojans. "Now, I'm totally a soccer player."
