Two incumbents and four challengers in the race for Downers Grove village council squared off last week in a forum hosted by the League of Women Voters. The forum, held March 26 at Downers Grove Village Hall, gave each of the candidates an opportunity to introduce themselves to voters and explain their positions on a number of key issues, including economic development, storm water management and human services. Incumbents Bob Barnett and Marilyn Schnell are seeking re-election to a second and sixth term, respectively. The four challengers—David S. Two forums will be held in the coming week for candidates running for Downers Grove Village Council. The first forum—hosted by the Downers Grove Watch Association, a nonpartisan citizens group—will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Downers Grove Park District Lincoln Center auditorium, 935 Maple Ave. The event will include a presentation from Bruno Behrend, executive director of For the Good of Illinois, on challenges facing Illinois municipalities. With heavy snow and hazardous driving conditions gripping the Chicago area Tuesday, officials opted to postpone the public forum for Downers Grove school board candidates. The Community High School District 99 candidate forum—hosted by the League of Women Voters of Downers Grove, Woodridge and Lisle—was scheduled for Tuesday night at Village Hall, but was canceled around 5 p.m. due to the snowstorm. "We've heard from two of the candidates and know they can't make it, so we're going to wait until everyone can be there and we can have a better crowd," said Hilary Denk, co-president of the League of Women Voters in Downers Grove.
