Girls Basketball: Ukoro, Hinsdale South Turn Tables on Downers Grove South

Hinsdale South 51, Downers Grove South 34: Center's 13 points, 11 rebounds key great defensive effort as the Hornets win on an emotional Senior Night.

Hinsdale South center Uzo Okoro was held to just four points when the Hornets lost 42-40 at Downers Grove South back on Jan. 10. It was a much different story Thursday night. The 6-foot Okoro dominated at both ends of the floor, leading all players with 13 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks as host Hinsdale South exacted revenge with a 51-34 drubbing of the Mustangs on Senior Night in Darien. The win solidified the Hornets’ grip on second place in the West Suburban Conference Gold Division. Hinsdale South (12-9, 7-2) has a two-game lead in the loss column over the Mustangs (13-9, 6-4), who have lost five straight games. “I think we prepared a lot better this time,” Okoro said. “We knew what to expect and I think we had a lot more intensity…

Girls Basketball: Proviso East Derails Downers South

Pirates run away from Mustangs, take two-game lead in West Suburban Gold race.

Proviso East (19-2, 8-0), which has won the last six conference championships, now is firmly in the driver’s seat in the league race. The Pirates have a two-game lead over the Mustangs (13-6, 6-2), who they swept this year, and Hinsdale South (10-9, 5-2) with four games remaining. “We still have four more to go,” …

Downers Grove South Girls Steal the Show

Carly Saraceno leads the Mustangs with 14 points and six steals in a 53-29 victory over Leyden.

The Downers Grove South girls basketball team did not disappoint in its home opener, which also happened to be teacher appreciation night. It did take the Mustangs a while to get it going, though. The final effort, however, certainly pleased the teachers as well as the rest of the crowd as South routed Leyden 53-29 on Tuesday thanks to a defense that forced 21 steals. The Mustangs (5-3, 2-1) got off to a slow start, missing several early opportunities from the field and the free throw line. Senior Carly Saraceno led the way with seven first-half points and three steals. She turned two of her steals into four points on fast-break opportunities. The Eagles (1-6, 0-4) kept pace with three 3-point field goals and six first-half points from …
