Tips for keeping your home—and holiday decor—safe.
The Downers Grove Fire Department is reminding residents of several home safety tips to keep in mind during the holiday season. Wreaths with red bulbs will be displayed at each of the village's fire stations from through Jan. 1, 2013. If a holiday-related fire occurs during this time, one of the red lights in each station's wreaths will be changed to white. It used to be Black Friday was for the earliest of early shoppers. Not anymore. Look around. The stores are ready now.
Look around the Chicago area and you'll see all the signs: The early birds no longer wait until Black Friday to do their Christmas shopping. This year, Black Friday is on Nov. 23, but big retailers and mail-order companies are starting well in advance. Amazon, for example, is beginning its Black Friday on Nov. 14. Crazy or crazy smart? If you're looking to shop local, you can check out Avec Panache, Consider It Done, Gabby's Gifts, Jolie Boutique or even Wells Street Popcorn to find a one-of-a-kind gift in the heart of Downers Grove. Maybe the big box stores are your thing? Walmart—which has locations in nearby Glen Ellyn and Darien—has already announced it is offering layaway again this year, with the iPad and HP Ultrabook-based laptops on the list of eligible purchases. Gingerbread houses will be on display throughout downtown Downers Grove from Friday, Nov. 23, through Saturday, Dec. 22.
The Downtown Downers Grove Management Corporation is seeking entries for its fourth annual gingerbread house contest. The Gingerbread Festival will be held Nov. 23-25 in downtown Downers Grove. Gingerbread houses will be on display at several participating merchants. Entries are welcome in three divisions: Family/Individual/Children, Professional and Culinary Student. A "Viewers' Choice" and "Elves' Choice" will be selected after a weekend of voting; winners will receive $50 in downtown Downers Grove gift certificates. All gingerbread houses will remain on display through Saturday, Dec. 22.
