Newtown School Shootings: Downers Grove Districts React

Downers Grove Grade School District 58 and Community High School District 99 released brief statements on school safety protocol following Friday's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.

School administrators in Downers Grove have taken to their districts' websites to address Friday's tragic school shooting in Newtown, CT. One gunman, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, attacked a suburban Connecticut elementary school Friday, killing 26 people, including 20 children, law enforcement sources said. Downers Grove Grade School District 58, which comprises 11 elementary schools and two middle schools, issued a statement to parents shortly after the shooting. Downers Grove High Schools Rank Among Best in Area, State

Both District 99 schools were recognized by the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times for their performance on the Prairie State Achievement Exam.

Both schools in Downers Grove's Community High School District 99 were among the top-performers in the Chicagoland area and state, according to rankings published last month by the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times. Both newspapers used 2012 Illinois School Report Card data in determining the rankings. Downers Grove North High School was ranked 23rd in the Chicago area and 24th in the state by the Chicago Sun-Times, down slightly from 2011 when it was ranked 20th in the area and 21st in the state. The Chicago Tribune ranked North High 28th among schools in DuPage, Kane, Cook, Lake, Will and McHenry counties. How Did Downers Grove Schools Do on the State Standardized Tests?

Patch put together a searchable database of the percent of students who met or exceeded requirements on Illinois' standardized tests, the ISAT and PSAE. Use it to search for your school or district.

The Illinois State Board of Education released its 2012 school report card data last week. It includes information on how students at each school and school district in the state did on standardized tests. Patch built this database that shows what percent of students met or exceeded state standards on the Illinois Standard Achievement Test (ISAT) and the Prairie State Achievement Examination (PSAE). You can search by your community to see how all the schools near you fared, or by specific district or school by using the drop down menus. 12 District 99 Students Named National Merit Semifinalists

Downers Grove North and South high school students are among 16,000 nationwide will be considered for a National Merit Scholarship next spring.

Twelve Community High School District 99 students have been named 2012-2013 National Merit semifinalists, district officials announced Wednesday. Seven of those students attend Downers Grove North High School. Five attend Downers Grove South High School. “All of us at District 99 congratulate these students on their achievements, and we are proud of their recognition in this prestigious program,” District 99 Superintendent Dr. Mark McDonald said in a statement.
