The Poi Dog Pondering concert, held April 5 at the Tivoli Theatre, raised funds to support educational grants in Downers Grove Grade School District 58.
The District 58 Education Foundation's April 5 Entertainment for Education fundraiser in partnership with WXRT, featuring an evening with Poi Dog Pondering at the Tivoli Theatre, raised more than $30,000 for the Foundation's programs in District 58. "It was truly a memorable evening, and we are so grateful to the community for their continued support of our organization,” said Education Foundation President Jay Stocki. Over the past decade, the Foundation has donated more than $400,000 in financial support, primarily in the form of annual classroom and building grants, to help District 58 offer expanded learning opportunities. A charity basketball game held earlier this month raised more than $10,000 for schools in Downers Grove Grade School District 58 On Feb. 17, the District 58 Education Foundation hosted the Harlem Wizards for an evening of basketball and comedy. During the event—held in the Downers Grove South High School gymnasium—the Wizards took on District 58 students, parents, staff and administrators, as well as representatives from the Downers Grove community. A “One School, One Book” reading program, iPads, interactive whiteboards, a middle school initiative called "Rachel’s Challenge," and a digital piano for the district’s music program were among the nearly two dozen grant requests funded by the District 58 Education Foundation for 2012-13. The grant recipients were recognized at the District 58 Board of Education meeting Monday night. Altogether the Foundation, which was founded in 2002 to enhance the education of students in District 58 and its 13 schools, gave away more than $35,000 in grants this school year, district officials said. The Education Foundation of Downers Grove Grade School District 58 will celebrate its 10th anniversary Thursday with a community open house. The event will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Herrick Middle School, 4435 Middaugh Ave., and is open to the public. Seventh grade is not sixth grade. It is one step closer to the big time: high school. To ease their middle-school jitters, incoming seventh-grade District 58 students are involved this week in a three-day program called Sneak Preview. The goals of Sneak Preview are to prepare students for the first day of school, meet their teachers, develop connections with new classmates, and reduce the anxiety associated with the transition from grade school to middle school. Sneak Preview gives students an opportunity to go through schedules and the routines of the day, practice opening their lockers, and a variety of other activities.
