Districts 58, 99 Partner to Prepare Students for Success in Math

New middle school pathways will support all students, according to district officials.

The following information was submitted by Downers Grove Grade School District 58: District 58's Common Core Standards-aligned mathematics program is designed to prepare all students to be successful by fostering development of key mathematical practices and true concept mastery through a balanced combination of procedure and understanding. On March 11, members of District 58's Mathematics Curriculum Committee shared with the Board of Education an update regarding the mathematics program, along with plans to further enhance the program for 2014-15. About 65 percent of school districts qualify for the ranking, but the number is shrinking and the number of districts on financial watch is growing.

It's not a rare achievement—after all, 65 percent of the school districts earn "Financial Recognition"—but it's nothing to be sneezed at either, considering the direction some other Illinois school districts are heading. Downers Grove Grade School District 58 was placed in Recognition, the highest financial designation in the Illinois State Board of Education’s annual Financial Profile, for fiscal year 2012, district officials announced this week. The Financial Profile provides a snapshot in time that helps ISBE gauge school districts’ financial condition based on five indicators of financial performance: fund-balance-to-revenue ratio, expenditures-to-revenue ratio, days cash on hand, percent of short-term borrowing available, and percent …

Downers Grove South Special Olympics Team Wins State Basketball Title

The 12-member team was celebrated after school Wednesday, just a few days after they won the Special Olympics Illinois State Basketball Tournament in Bloomington-Normal.

The Downers Grove South community came together in full force Wednesday to celebrate a crowning achievement for the school—a state title for its Special Olympics basketball program. The 12-member team wrapped up a 21-6 season by winning the championship at the Special Olympics Illinois State Basketball Tournament on March 17 at the Illinois State University campus in Bloomington-Normal. On Wednesday, the school held an after-school celebration to toast the team and present the players with championship T-shirts.  The team's coach, Kevin Ahrens, said the players' positive attitudes and "team-first approach" led them to the state title. Downers Grove North Names New Associate Principal

Ken Sorensen will take over as associate principal for operations beginning July 1, replacing Chuck Hiscock.

Downers Grove North High School has named a new associate principal. The Community High School District 99 Board of Education voted unanimously March 18 to promote Ken Sorensen from the position of assistant principal in charge of student activities and technology to associate prinicpal for operations. Effective July 1, Sorensen will replace Chuck Hiscock, who was recently named the new principal of West Aurora High School. In his new capacity on the District 99 administrative team, Sorensen will oversee all facets of operations, technology and student discipline as well as personnel management at the school, according to district officials. “I am excited about the challenge of new responsibilities and the opportunity to continue to serve …

Gorski withdrew from the April 9 election ballot Thursday, citing personal reasons. The field is now down to four candidates.

Martin Gorski, a candidate for the Community High School District 99 Board of Education, has withdrawn from the upcoming consolidated election. Gorski, a Darien resident, announced his departure from the District 99 school board race Thursday night, citing "personal reasons."  "I have withdrawn for personal reasons and wish to thank those who have offered support over the last few months," Gorksi said in an email. "I continue to believe that the Illinois school system needs better financial monitoring and internal controls and plan on continuing my efforts to inform the local school boards and the general public about the potential problems in this area." Our district and most districts in the country have hardly any technical or vocational courses to offer. Just 37% of Americans hold at least a BA degree. What do we plan to do with the rest of the students? D99 should lead the education revolution and revamp our school system to prepare students better for the workforce, not just college.
