How to Test Your Home for Radon

Health department encourages homeowners to test their homes for radon.

The DuPage County Health Department encourages homeowners to educate themselves on the dangers of radon, an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas, during National Radon Awareness Month. Radon is a radioactive gas generated by the natural decay of uranium in soil and rocks, estimated to cause as many as 20,000 deaths from lung cancer each year throughout the United States. The Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today, following tobacco use. Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk from radon. Fourth West Nile Death Confirmed in DuPage County

The number of residents who have contracted West Nile virus has increased to 28, according to the DuPage County Health Department.

Officials confirmed Wednesday that a fourth person has died in DuPage County as a result of contracting West Nile virus. The DuPage County Health Department reported 28 people have contracted the virus, with four of those cases resulting in deaths. The confirmed cases of West Nile virus have affected people ranging in age from their 20s to 70s, said David Hass, public information officer for the health department. Those who became ill were located in Addison, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Glen Ellyn, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Naperville, Villa Park and Westmont. Health Department Confirms Second West Nile Death in DuPage County

The number of cases of West Nile virus continue to rise and more cases are expected to be confirmed, according to the DuPage County Health Department.

A second DuPage County resident has died as a result of contracting West Nile virus, the DuPage County Health Department announced Friday. The health department confirmed that the number of cases of West Nile virus in the county has risen to 15, with two of those cases resulting in deaths related to the virus. Lombard Village President Bill Mueller, 76, became the first West Nile fatality in DuPage County. He had been battling cancer since 2008, and had been hospitalized in early August and died last month. The 15 people affected by West Nile Virus are in their 20s to 70s, and are located in Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Naperville, Villa Park and Westmont. More West Nile Cases Confirmed in DuPage County; Residents Urged to Take Precautions

Additional cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed since last week, according to the DuPage County Health Department.

The DuPage County Health Department continues to urge residents to take precautions to minimize the risk of mosquito bites. The latest request comes as the health department said additional cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in DuPage County. The count has risen to 12 with cases of the virus confirmed in residents from Carol Stream, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Naperville, Villa Park and Westmont. Last week the health department confirmed there were seven cases of West Nile virus. Those with the virus range in age from their 20s to 70s, according to a news release from the DuPage County Health Department. So far only one fatality from the virus was confirmed. DuPage County Reports 7 Human Cases of West Nile Virus

The DuPage County Health Department reported new cases Monday in Lisle and Naperville.

The DuPage County Health Department announced Monday that there are now seven human cases of West Nile virus in DuPage County. Individual cases have been confirmed in Carol Stream, Downers Grove, Lisle, Lombard, Naperville and Villa Park, the health department announced Monday. The ages of those affected range from 40s to 70s. As of Tuesday morning, the state has confirmed 48 human cases of West Nile virus, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health WNV website. On Aug. 18, Lombard Village President Bill Mueller, 76, became the first West Nile fatality in DuPage County. A 64-year-old man from Elgin also succumbed to the disease on Aug. 23. The DuPage County Health Department is now reporting a total of five human cases of West Nile virus in the county, and officials say the number is expected to rise in the coming days. Individual cases have been confirmed in Carol Stream, Downers Grove, Lombard and Villa Park, the health department announced Monday. The ages of those affected range from 40s to 70s. On Saturday, Lombard Village President Bill Mueller, 76, became the first West Nile fatality in DuPage County. He had been battling cancer since 2008, and had been hospitalized since Aug. 5. Villa Park Man in His 50s is the Second Confirmed Case of West Nile Virus in DuPage

A Downers Grove woman was the first patient diagnosed in DuPage County. Numbers of those infected is expected to continue to rise.

Just days after reporting the first human case of West Nile virus in DuPage County, a Villa Park man was the second person diagnosed with the virus.  Earlier this week, the DuPage County Health Department reported a Downers Grove woman in her 50s was the first person diagnosed with the virus in the county. Thursday, the health department said a man, also in his 50s, has the virus. The health department is encouraging residents to take precautions against the bites, since the number of mosquitoes infected with the virus is high this year. Hot and dry weather conditions created a perfect breeding ground for the Culex mosquitoes that are the main carriers of the virus. Downers Grove Woman is First Local Human Case of West Nile Virus This Year

The DuPage County Health Department reports today that the woman is in her 50s. People older than 50 are at greater risk to contract the virus.

A woman from Downers Grove is the first reported human case of West Nile Virus to be diagnosed in DuPage County this year, the DuPage County Health Department reported Tuesday. The health department has recently warned residents of the high risk for infection from the virus after the warm, dry temperatures created a perfect breeding environment for the Culex mosquito, the main transmitter of the virus to humans. The woman diagnosed with the virus is in her 50s, according to the health department. People older than 50 and those with medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease and organ transplants, have a greater risk for serious illness from the virus.  About one in five people who are infected with West Nile…
