Election 2012: Voter Registration Deadline Looms

Have you registered yet? Here's a list of things you need to know in order to vote in the April 9 consolidated election.

If you haven’t yet registered to vote, get it off your to-do list now. The voter registration deadline for the April 9 consolidated election is Tuesday, March 12. Two forms of identification are needed when registering, according to election officials. Early voting will be held March 25 through April 6. DuPage County Officials: Voter Turnout on Par with Previous Elections

No major issues were reported as of 4 p.m., according to Bob Saar, executive director of the DuPage County Election Commission.

As DuPage County enters its final hours of voting, election officials said they are expecting turnout to reach levels seen in the last three presidential elections. "We checked in with polling places around 2 p.m., and from what we can tell turnout was around 55 percent," said Bob Saar, executive director of the DuPage County Election Commission. In previous general elections, the voter turnout in DuPage County ranged from 74 to 77 percent, Saar said. "We're still expecting the after-work crowd, so there's no reason to believe we won't reach that level—or maybe even exceed—by the time the polls close," he said. Early Voting Ends Saturday for Nov. 6 General Election

Downers Grove Village Hall is one of 12 sites designated for early voting through Nov. 3.

Early voting for the Nov. 6 general election ends Saturday at Downers Grove Village Hall, 801 Burlington Ave., and several other area locations. All voters registered in DuPage County may vote early at any of the 12 designated polling places, now through Nov. 3. Voters must bring a government-issued photo ID such as a passport, driver's license or military ID. Voting will be conducted on ATM-like touch screens, according to the DuPage County Election Commission. Early Voting in Full Swing in Downers Grove

Nearly 4,300 votes were cast at Downers Grove Village Hall through Saturday, according to the DuPage County Election Commission. Early voting ends Nov. 3.

More than 33,000 DuPage County voters have already cast their ballots in the Nov. 6 election. Through the weekend, a total of 33,668 DuPage residents participated in early voting at the county's 12 designated polling places, according to the DuPage County Election Commission. In Downers Grove, 4,294 registered voters had cast their ballots at Village Hall as of Saturday, officials said. As of Tuesday night, totals were not available for the week beginning Oct. 29. In Illinois, early voting started Oct. 22 and ends Nov. 3. Downers Grove Village Hall, 801 Burlington Ave., will serve early voters from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Downers Grove, DuPage High School Students Choose Obama During Mock Elections

Students at 18 schools in DuPage County participated in mock elections earlier this month. Of the 18 schools, only three voted Mitt Romney ahead of Barack Obama.

Most DuPage County high school students prefer Barack Obama over Mitt Romney, according to mock elections conducted earlier this month. The only schools where students chose Romney over Obama were Wheaton North (682-677), Benet Academy (315-173) and Hinsdale Central (243-172), according to the DuPage Election Commission. The DuPage County Board of Election Commissioners and local chapters of the League of Women Voters (LWV) staged and coordinated the mock elections at18 high schools, including Downers Grove North. The league received $7,125 in grant money from the election commission to conduct the elections, all of which were held during the first week of October.
