Downers Grove Staff to Review Chicken Coop Regulations Despite Split Council
Commissioner Becky Rheintgen requested the council explore the possibility of increasing the number of chickens permitted, decreasing setback requirements, banning roosters and requiring a license or permit for keeping chickens.
Despite some disagreement among Downers Grove commissioners, village staff will begin researching the current ordinance on backyard chicken coops and whether it's feasible to change existing requirements. The council discussed the village's fowl regulations during the new business portion of its meeting Tuesday night—marking the first time officials have publicly addressed the issue since the ordinance was adopted in 1987. Great idea, my neighbors want me to get chickens, but I didn't want to risk it with current laws. Finding a lot with a 50' setback is not easy here in Downers.   more ›
